Hi all need to be a wiki on this concerning issues when away and this card.
So I'm in Canada and stuffed up my PIN.
No money, pay phone to use.
I actually tried a subway who gave me their phone..but would not reach +61 number.
This is how I ended up getting PIN changed:
Dialled operator, who then put me onto Telstra reverse charges number.
Then fromTelstra reverse charged to travel insurance.
Travel insurance called me back on pay phone.
Got travel insurance to ring 28 degrees assist number on card which is WRONG actually 90 not 89(at end)
Spoke to them and informed locked 24hrs unless you change PIN.
Pay phone's buttons would not work.
Ended up calling travel insurance again as above that did the change process on another phone while I listened....BINGO

Can someone tell me the ATM fee charges here?
$1.50 to $2.00
Found scortia $1.50, RBC wont let you take out more than $400, RBC is $2.00 and Bank of Montreal did not tell me any fee?
Used travel insurance to call me back

Edit: I was too exhausted to let everyone know that yes I have backup cirrus and cash in AU and US, but I wanted card fixed up.
TID multi-trip annual.
Have skype but just free no account and 28degrees dont have skype name\number.
Yep after 3 failed attempts inlocks(invalid pin) takes 24hrs to unlock unless you change PIN, which is instant.

This isn't going to help you, but it may help someone else- surely you had both a phone and backup cash and other cards? You did not rely solely on 1 or 2 cards from the same provider? Also, glad you had travel insurance and that they were helpful. Who was it with?

Next, if you have anything with wifi you should be able to skype for a reasonable charge. This is always an option for those stuck without a phone, or wary of high roaming charges. If I was stranded, roaming charges would not be high on my priority list.

Lastly, how did you "stuff up your pin"? Does it lock if you get it wrong x times in an hour or something.

Right another issue: was working fine and now not recognised in metro machine and yha in Montreal these both are for the chip.
swipe in yha works, but not possible for metro(that had worked two days ago?)
Does atm use chip or swipe bar?
Give em a call about issue?
In Canada they want SIGN all the time?

Back from Santiago and Rio De Janiero with a brand new 28 Degrees card (and transit in Auckland Airport), the card performed very well. Had an issue on the last day with an ATM in a bank in Rio where the ATM itself seemed "slow". A PIN error came up twice, so at the point I cancelled the transaction and converted some USD I was carrying in cash for local Brazilian Real to pay the taxi driver to the airport. Some of the local ATMs had special charges. In the overall scheme of things I'm not worried about these or whether they were in fact fees that the card promised not to bill. Very impressed.

Hi all, I've been using the 28 Degrees Card for quite a few years now (going back to when it was the Clear Advantage MasterCard), and I am in Malaysia, where I have been for quite a while. Anyhoo, I had a transaction put through on my card twice. It was only for $16 AUD, but the machine ran out of paper, so the cashier swiped it again saying that the initial transaction hadn't gone through. I have checked the 28 Degrees website, and have tried Tweeting them (it's my first time using Twitter, so its very possible my DM's are not going through). Is there any way to alert customer service to avoid having to call Australia and spend an eternity on the phone, and possibly have my card cancelled in order to reverse this secondary $16 AUD charge? I definitely only signed for one, so the company that made the charge surely has no recourse. Thanks in advance.

Heading OS shortly, am I right in assuming I just need to bpay some of my own funds onto the card then am able to withdraw down to my credit limit?

Read those posts linked to in post #1 of this thread.

I have made a few BPay deposits on my card recently and have noticed that if the transaction is submitted in the morning the amount shows up on-line the next morning.
This is just like the good old Wizard days so I hope it continues :)

For foreign transactions the best course of action is to call the card issuer to dispute the transaction, NOT the merchant. If you contact the merchant and they agree to reverse it, you suffer any negative exchange rates. If the card issuer cancels the transaction, then it is voided (so no reversal and no exchange takes place).

They're usually pretty quick to answer in if you need to call AU.

Not sure why you would have to cancel the card? Cancelling the card still makes you prima facie liable for any transactions on that card. With a cancelled card you still have to show that you didn't make a particular transaction in order to have it reversed. (This can actually work in favour of the card holder as sometimes they forget to cancel standing orders etc which can sometimes still get processed).

I don't think I have ever seen any ATM anywhere rely on chip only.

I found it depends on the country and EFTPOS terminal.

Did you get a receipt for the first transaction? EFTPOS terminals don't usually cancel a transaction just because it runs out of paper, they usually just old the printing and wait for paper

.

No one is going to discuss your personal banking account via Twitter, because it is not a secure communication method. The banks would be breaking the law if they do this.

have my card cancelled in order to reverse this secondary $16 AUD charge?

Cancelling a card does not change anything to transactions already approved or settled.

You have to call the GE, or write to them.

You can try to make a collect call to GE on their Melbourne phone number.

I only received one receipt, which was signed for because it's a credit card.

The twitter option was because they list it as a way of contacting them on the website.

Making it possible to dispute a transaction online would make sense in this day and age.

Depending on how long you are away for, you can probably wait until you get home. There is certain time period for lodging disputes, which I think is 30/60 days...

There may well be an option on the dispute form for a 'duplicated transaction' which I can see on another issuer's dispute form. You just say that you authorised one transaction and give GE a copy of the receipt for the goods you purchased etc.

I don't think you'll be able to do the dispute while overseas unless you have access to a scanner and fax to send them a signed form and copies of documents... So I'd recommend waiting until you get home.

duplicate transactions are pretty obvious to card companies. they can easily confirm without having much information - they can check from the code how soon each transaction was processed. Do 28 degrees require you to send in signed receipts and other documentation? That is different from others such as ANZ, a call is all it takes with them.

Has anyone come across a Bangkok bank that doesn't charge this ATM fee?

Not a Bangkok Bank, but the Singaporean credit union ATM's, AEON do not charge the fee. They are not as well sign posted as the major banks but there are actually a lot of them about in Bangkok. If you do a search it should come up, I have posted about it elsewhere. They are in most of the major tourist spots (MBK, Siam Paragon, etc.) as well as a lot of Thai supermarkets such as Jusco, Carrefour, Tesco.

Great, thank you.

Incidentally, I had no issue with an ATM fee withdrawing money at Singapore airport. The ATM was UOBS or UOS or something like that. And an excellent exchange rate as usual: 1.289 when the market rate for the day was about 1.296.

Few ATMs will charge you a fee in Singapore. I can't recall that I have ever come across one that does, in fact.
A few machines will not accept the 28 degrees card but I haven't noticed a pattern yet.

you can google AEON bank and get the locations for Bangkok. But they aren't well signed when you do find them! The one in the Tops Complex on Silom raod is along side a couple other machines and only identified by a small sign on the machine itself.

I wasn't able to get to one of the recommended fee-free banks in Bangkok but nonetheless appreciate the suggestions for next time.

In terms of exchange rates using the 'cash advance' of the card, I withdrew THB15000 earlier this week. It posted on my card as AUD475.32 (including the THB150 fee). That equates to an exchange rate of 31.55 which is pretty much (if not better) than the market rate of the day.

I'm sure I've read that in ARN + CPH the card has been used without issue for cash withdrawal, but if anyone could confirm that'd be great.

I wonder if it's worth us building a table and sticking it in the first post? This would help with the queries on which countries do charge, where you can find fee free ATM's etc. as well?
