Been QF bronze for 10 years plus. Never been silver.
Almost never fly on business; only for holidays and mostly with points accrued on CC.
Last week got 270 SCs for return to Asia. Need another 30 to get me up to silver
Questions.
What are the benefits of silver?
Will reward redemption availability improve - especially in J?
Assuming I fly in next month to get the SCs, how long do I stay silver?
How do I get the extra 30 SCs?

Should I book a discount Y trip MEL-BNE? (30SC).

All and any suggesions gratefully received

Well aside from the flashy bag tags, you will get the following:

J check in desk when travelling INT
You will also get free seat selection on your flights.
1 lounge entry ticket.

You will stay silver til the end of your next FF year. So if your renewal is in April, then you will stay Silver til April 2013.

MEL-BNE is probably the easiest way to get it. up and back in a day.

As soon as I had posted, I noticed the "similar posts" immediately below!! Sorry!
I had searched the site before posting but very little came up.
I also know that the whole status thing has been changed since some of these posts were made, possibly making them less relevant.
My main question is how redemption availability might change?

Thanks

I agree with the others. Definitely worth getting to silver. The next thing you know, you'll be aiming for gold (as I did).

I agree it is worth it. Additional checked baggage allowances are also something to consider. Especially if you are on holidays.

Silver is worth it.
Maybe to really get you into the swing of things, you could do MEL SYD MEL on the 28th Jan?

The JetStarter Plus fare will get you 10 SC I believe. Maybe do one of the sectors earning Economy instead of discount economy, and you will have your 30sc, PLUS get into the F Lounge to see what you really want to aim for, and get to meet a great bunch of AFFers...:)

I met them for the 1st time at a similar event 12 months ago, & have not been the same since...;);)

Good point on the above.. if you had around 18k of points and about $70 you could fly J MEL-SYD on a JASA for 40SC then price match JQ35 for the return. good way to earn silver

Whilst this would be a great day - be aware that visiting the F lounge will cost you much more than quoted above.

You'll want to go back - ie. you'll be aiming for Platinum ;)

If you are a Bronze then Silver is definitely worth it.

I remember when I first reached Silver in 2004 I no longer had to line up in the snaking economy queues!

Even better were the 2 op-ups to business class on a SYD-BKK economy class return trip as a Silver in December 2004-January 2005. :D Not bad for someone with only 18 months membership and almost as many op-ups I have had as a Platinum for 5 years! :p

Hang on. I thought the F lounge was only for Plat/OW Emerald or those travelling F? Are you sure those travelling J on a JQ/QF int flight no. entitles you to this?

The first class lounge is only for OWE, I think what our FF brothers were referring to is the upcoming FLounge visit :), times like this wish I was living on the East Coast!

If traveling on the same flight with a Platinum, they can guest 1 person into the F lounge. The flight & day I suggested will be top heavy with platinums, all traveling together.

Run like mad and forgo all thoughts of status on an airline.

It becomes an obsession and you'll post here all the time and look for cheap JASAs or even FASAs. You'll scour the internet for cheap fares and ways to increase your number of FF points.

Oh and when you start meeting AFFers in the flesh you'll have an even greater time.

Is it worth it? Heck yes!!

When I first started flying, I was happy enough to redeem vouchers with points through the ff shop. Then I started flying a bit more, and invested in a QP membership. After which, I only had a few more SCs to reach silver, and took a flight to meet that. Thinking that I was happy with QPPS, I ended up being a SG 4 months before my anniversary date. And now, I've got at least 270SCs planned within the first fortnight of my next membership year...

So, please, for your own sanity, and so that other normal people won't think that you are weird... do NOT get the 30SCs and do NOT start following in the footsteps of the people on this forum.

I am still an NB

But I know, deep down, that I'm going to be like others here

Compulsively flying

The old me would never fly to Europe just to fly J back to Australia

I'm a uni student working part-time at a Cafe and I've spent $5k since August on flights just for myself
