Only 6000 more points than on AA for the same flights. Oh and maybe still a bit more in the way of fuel fines than AA.

Yep. For me it would be:

QF 96,000 miles+AUD846.22 out of MEL
QF $2410 out of CBR
AA 90,000 miles+USD331.90 out of CBR

Not particularly appealing, even if I wanted to fly QF in Y.

I got it and I'm NB, with a enough points to do the trip, so I think that's probably the "target". I received a 2xQP passes offer for transferring 50K points 2 months ago, so I gather they are dangling some more bait here.... would've been good to get a general discount off all classic awards rather than just those to the UK.

Could it be related to DXB stopover rather than SIN or BKK or HKG ?

We love an Asian stopover and have/will continue to select OW airlines that provide this as an option.

Can't imagine we are all that different to most other people!
