478 bus to Melbourne airport? [no more]

I took this route last Sunday from HOTP.

Walk across road to Jolimont Station.
1 stop to Filnders St Station. Arrive Plat 1, Transfer to Plat 5.
Take Craigeburn line to Broadmeadows.
Walk down ramp to street, 901 bus is waiting for train arrival.
Quick journey to airport.

Door to door in just over 60min, for $6 on Myki (Sat/Sunday cap - albeit normally only $6.06 on a weekday - Zone1/2 2-hr fare)

Were about 20-odd passengers on the 901 from Broadmeadows to the Airport, so definitely becoming more popular

Also the airport bus stop is actually closer then it once was (past tiger!).

Looks like the 478 / 479 buses no longer go to Essendon Railway Station (nor Moonee Ponds).

Information is hard to find, but Airport West now seems to be as close to the city as these services now go. From there you can still catch a #59 tram to/from the city, albeit a 50 minute+ trip.

So, the 901 bus is now the better option (Previously, if your timing was right, the 478/479 bus via Essendon would be 25 minutes or so quicker than the 901 via Broadmeadows R/S).

Bugger! Living in Brunswick we have used the service from Moonee Ponds a few times, connects (or used to connect) well with another bus that runs across through Brunswick.

Does anyone know how to get the PTV website journey planner to show the options by PT? Whenever I put in Southern Cross to Melbourne Airport the only thing it will show is the SkyBus when I know there should be train/bus combinations through Sunbury Station and Broadmeadows, very annoying trying to figure it out.

I can piece it together doing Southern Cross to Broadmeadows and Broadmeadows to Melbourne Airport but it won't show it in one journey. Have PTV got some deal with SkyBus where they aren't allowed to show it from Southern Cross as being an option?

Click on "more search options" which will take you to a larger search page. In the first box there are some options below the Leaving from and Going about modes of transport. Just make sure the Skybus option is unchecked. It will then give you the trip without Skybus.

Often I've been the only one on 901 all the way to the airport. Also it often runs much quicker than the schedule once the bus leaves Broadmeadows.

Thanks for that, so PTV are complicit in this. The problem with the bus being empty is then PTV go, oh well no on uses the public buses to the airport so we will get rid of them. Problem is they don't make it easy to find out the info on them!

Don't get me started on that. Poor management is what destroys good public transport. For example, one of the figures in Transport behind the waste of money that is MYKI is now employed in NSW for managing OPAL. I don't think the writers of Yes Minister could have topped that.
