Not sure if its been mentioned, did a search and couldn't find much, but I see AMEX Velocity are offering 50k Bonus points for signing up and spending $500 in the first 3 months. With annual card fee of $349, its about $0.007 per point. Worth it? Whats a Velocity point usually worth?

Given that it also comes with a free return domestic flight (from a bizarre cherry picked list of destinations based on your home airport) per year, I think this a great deal...I will be going for it.

This thread might belong in the current credit card promos section...I did look there yesterday and didn't see this offer.

Definitely looks good, is there a minimum period you have to have the card? ie get out before the next annual fare.

Also, does anyone know if the "Discount Business Class Companion fare" amounts to much? Not terribly helpful in the TnC's.

There won't be a minimum time period...just long enough for the points to post!

As for the discount business class companion...long haul only AND it must be booked in the business flexi fare class - I picked a random date for MEL-LAX and business saver (I assume not eligible) was $3170 and business was $6783...so the maths certainly doesn't stack up for this 'benefit'!

Yes, can't see too many taking up the business companion offer as it doesn't stack up. But I took up this card a year ago receiving 30K points and 200SC as well. Have cashed in my return flight (SYD-MCY) getting SCs and points on that as well, and used it to purchase a lot of Virgin flights racking up another 48K in points. Plan to cancel before renewal, but it's been a good deal for me.

I haven't posted enough posts to paste the link, but a simple Google search will pull it up.

Interesting to see that the restrictions on applicants have been broadened:

"Offer only available to new American Express Velocity Platinum Card members who apply, are approved by 31 July 2013 and spend $500 in the first 3 months of American Express Velocity Card membership."

I seem to recall that some of the more recent points promotions have required the applicant to be a new-to-Amex customer.

Does anybody have any experience with this? I seem to recall reading about people who have previously or currently hold AMEX Cards getting the sign on bonus points but it seems a big gamble to take. Might make a call to them tomorrow.

I mean if I used to have the American Express Velocity card but cancelled it 12 months ago, then am I a new customer?

Which site did you look on this? I notice that for the link below:

American Express: American Express Velocity Platinum Card

the T&C is:
"Offer only available to new American Express Card members who apply, are approved by 31 July 2013 and spend $500 in the first 3 months of American Express Velocity Card membership. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks after the $500 spend benchmark has been met for the 50,000 bonus Velocity Points to be awarded to the Cardmember's Velocity Account. This advertised offer is not applicable or valid in conjunction with any other advertised or promotional offer"

Thats what I saw as well, leading me to believe you must have NO current AMEX cards nor ever have held an AMEX card.

Still, I'm going to call tomorrow and see what sort of answer I get.

All will be revealed in the next post, as this one is number 10...!!!

Here you go - see footnote 10. Looks like there is an inconsistency on the Amex website.

50000 is a decent amount...had the 30000 with Foxtel and 20000 when I got a Virgin Money CC. The annual fee is certainly on the high side which puts me off this.

I've got a Velocity AMEX card with 30k bonus pts that was on offer at the time 2 yrs ago. I've been an AMEX member since 2004 but had no existing AMEX cards at the time of applying for the velocity card. I still got the bonus pts with no problem.

Already have NAB Gold Velocity VISA/AMEX, just signed up for this so we'll see if I get the bonus. Kept a screenshot of T+C's so fingers crossed. The free return fare will almost cover the annual fee.

Would be keen to see how you go, I too have the NAB Visa/AMEX combo, was worried it might cause problems. My wife is also a cardholder but strictly speaking isn't the account holder, worst case put it in her name I guess!

Will do.

You can then get the free 2nd card aswell and just cut up your wifes card :) .

Started a thread in the Credit Cards - current offers section about this.

Spoke to Amex today to cancel by Gold CC - they said I can apply tomorrow for a new card and be considered a new customer.

Even if you redeem the 50K points for MEL-SYD Y flights and use your complimentary flights the same way you're looking at, at least $700 value for your $349 annual fee.

It's a great offer IMO - much more generous than the standard 30K bonus they often have on this card.

Hmm I just called Amex and they said it is only available to New American Express members as per condition 2 of the link in post number 9 and not as per condition 10 of the link in post number 12 :( Would have definitely considered signing up for the bonus points.
