One is from the Old Norse vaett-vangr, or 'field for the trial of a legal action'. Another theory is that it was the "Wet Field" compared to the nearby dry field at Driffield.
The first rude definition of the unusual place name was used in a book called The Meaning of Liff - a dictionary of “things there aren’t words for yet”, using existing place names as the entry words. It was written by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd, of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fame, and says Wetwang means wet cough.
