Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I am glad I don't travel domestic... Too complicated...

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Thank you both.

For my B fares SYD-CBR and MEL-CBR I've been getting 750 EQP and 1000 RDM which seems to differ from the above calculations.

If I understand correctly MEL-SYD in V as opposed to B will earn me 500 instead of 750 EQP but the same RDM of 1000.

Serfty, I'm guessing you're using some kind of code in your post as otherwise I don't know what "MAX" refers to.

Did you make a "whoops"? I can't see it.

Yes, I wrote whoops, but after looking at it again (only skimmed serfty's post as I was leaving work) looks like I was right the first time.

For any QF flight <500 miles (eg MEL-SYD), yes, V class will earn you 500 EQP and B class 750 EQP. Both have the same RDM of 1000 for a PLT/EXP.

So the only advantage to booking a higher QF economy bucket for an AA elite (<500 mile flight) is an increased EQP earn (3 levels: 750, 500 and 250 EQP). RDM is the same for all classes. ie both O class and B class earn 1000 RDM in your case.

Alas with AA every calculation needs to be labeled.

Y class fares for elites flying on QF crediting AA
EQM
The greater of (base miles or minimum earn = 500)
where base miles in
Y B H earn 100% of route miles
N G S V L M K earn 50% of route miles
O Q earn 25%

EQP as a percentage of EQM
Y and B fares 150%
V L M K 100%
N G S O Q 25%

RDM calculated by
EQM + (EQM times service class bonus) + (EQM time status bonus) + any special offer bonus

CBR-SYD is 439.
In B class...
EQM = 500
EQP = 750
RDM (as AA PLT/EXP) 1000
In O class as a nobody
EQM = 110
EQP = 28
RDM = 110

It gets more interesting in short flights in the W J or F cabin... :shock: when the route miles get multiplied by the class of service multiplier...

Happy wandering

Fred

Here is another guide:
Miles and Points (AA) - FlyerGuide
MTEU = miles toward elite upgrades
For QF fares the only difference is that not all earn at 1.0 EQM per mile flown (see underline below).

Step-by-Step Procedure for Calculating Miles and Points

  1. Look up your original (prior to any upgrades) reservation on AA.com and determine the booking class for each segment.
  2. Calculate the number of EQM you will earn for each qualifying segment at 1.0 EQM per mile flown, subject to the 500-mile minimum for elites only. Elites will also earn the same number of MTEU.
  3. Calculate the number of EQP you will earn for each qualifying segment based on EQM and booking class.
  4. Calculate the number of RDM you will earn for each qualifying segment based on miles flown, booking class, and elite status.
a. Determine miles flown b. Calculate any Class-of-Service bonus RDM based on miles flown c. Calculate miles flown + Class-of-Service bonus; if you are an elite, increase this total to the 500 RDM minimum d. Calculate any Elite Bonus RDM based on the higher of miles flown or 500 miles, excluding any Class-of-Service Bonus RDM e. Add (c) and (d) to arrive at your Total RDM.

60K for SP-ME
40K for ME-EU
100K in total.

100K. 60 + 40 as you have to break it up due to not being able to transit the ME to EUR except for DOH on QR.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

thx to all....I have 180K velocity with no chance of getting many more...unless I buy them through SPG or another CC signup...so msybe I could use the 180 for the return and buy the 100 AA to get there...make sense?

Was QR and DOH actually added in for SP-EU? I thought it was valid for NA/SA/EU/Africa-DOH-Africa/Asia1(2)

I'm probably reading the AA award chart incorrectly but it seems to say SP -Europe 80K in F...

Correct. But you can't use EY and route via AUH for it. So only option is to separate one ways that get you to EUR. Hence 100K each way.

could you explain this one more please? QR doesn't fly F to Australia?

AAdvantage has very strict routing rules. You are not allowed to transit the Middle East to go to Europe. The only exception is the QF flights via DXB as they are a single flight number. It's a "stop" like the BA SYD-sin-LHR one. The other exception is transiting DOH because it's QR's hub. So, simply, you can't transit AUH on EY unless you make two separate award bookings: one to there and one from there. Hence 100K not 80K for F.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I don't think even Qr via Doh is 1 award? I know Aa made changes to some routing rules after Qr joined but AFAIK it didn't include South Pacific to Europe in the three zone exclusion. Would be very happy to hear if anyone has had personal experience to the contrary.

Apologies, you are correct. The Doha exemption should apply but AA's stingy routing rules don't allow it. I confused myself with Asia 1/2 to Europe being allowed to transit Doha (why, I don't know, when MH and CX fly there nonstop, but you can't do that from SP so you 'need' Doha).

Nope. A change of flight number is not permitted in the Middle East on the way from AU-Europe. QR is out of the mix.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

To be fair 200k for EY first return is still a great use of points.
