John, I respectfully think you have seen almost as much as anyone could. Amazing travels! I admire this. You inspire me. :)

Thanks, mate. In terms of the wildlife seen, I’ve posted almost nothing as almost all of that is on my camera.

Even then, the pics I do manage to get pale compared with what the heavily-armed people have been getting.

I shall bumble on...

It’s 0530h here and we’re mustering for a boat wildlife excursion. Those who went to watch turtle egg-laying last night are waxing lyrical.

I’ve seen it before, so I didn’t go. They said it said it was very well organised by the turtle conservancy people.

Photography was not permitted.

So even if you did go you couldn't have shown us photos.

Mon Repos is closer, just saying.

Reading the trip report with interest, I can't wait to retire although I have 18 years to wait.

This place is massively popular and it would be bedlam and no doubt catastrophic for the turtles if not very carefully and strictly managed. I dread to think what will happen when people fom a certain part of the world invade...

The boat ride meandering along the waterways early this morning was great but marred by my camera failing. Memo to @RooFlyer and others who may have also bought a Sony HX90V camera: based on my experience in Belize a couple of years ago, and again today, it has a serious deficiency in not being able to handle high humidity. The symptoms were the same each time: switch on, lens partly extends, screen message says ‘turn off and on again’. Do that to no avail about three times, then it becomes totally unresponsive while still partly open.

Fortunately I also brought my previous Lumix as backup - but that didn’t help while on the boat ride as it was back in my bag. Now charging. Phone photos barely suffice as soon as any zoom is applied.

After keeping the Sony in my pocket to warm it and taking out the battery and putting it back in, it now seems to be working again. But, of course, I can no longer trust it while in the tropics.

The wildlife sightings were good. I was particularly p!ssed off to not get the emerald lizard (aka ‘Jesus lizard’ owing to its ability to seemingly walk on water by running incredibly fast) and the displaying tiger herons in better quality and closer-up.

Going for a walk in the rainforest in about an hour and another boat trip this afternoon.

Rain pouring down now. It’s not called rainforest for no reason...

Thanks for the update. I took a spare camera last trip after your first experience :)

Bundy’s just a kid, really :eek::D.

Another boat excursion this afternoon - in the steady rain, but it was windless and warm, so not unpleasant.

Jackpot! Two-toed sloth female with a very small baby tucked up against it. I got some pics on my (backup) camera of the baby peeking out. Sooooo cute :):D.

I would have been furious if the cantankerous Sony camera had failed on me this afternoon and I didn’t have the backup prepared :mad:.

Sloths are cute?

Moving on to Volcan Arenal (1630m). It was dormant for hundreds of years but suddenly blew its top in 1968. Activity carried on until 2010. Cloud cleared momentarily when I reached the viewpoint.

La Fortuna waterfall nearby is 65m high.

The morning was spent walking in the Arenal NP. I managed to get a few things on my phone camera for immediate posting, including a small venomous viper snake, a chunky caterpillar and a beautiful mushroom that is no doubt poisonous.

Phwoar, just phwoar!

I was feeling really hungry tonight after the 5 km walk and climbing those 500 steps into and out of the waterfall.

A steak and a good red for some reason just came to mind. I decided to peel off from the group and check out a small family-owned parilla well off the main drag in very touristy La Fortuna.

Scoping it, I like the vibe. Menu looks the goods. Tight little wine list that no fool has put together. I’m in.

A little free taster of fine-grain corn chips and dips, a stunning ceviche starter (I’m starting to think that they do better ceviche in Costa Rica than they do in Peru...)

Pineapple sorbet palate-cleanser.

Then the steak. Rare sirloin with THE best chimichurri I have ever tasted. Just an insanely good balance of the garlic and chillies. Like cough, hard to explain - but you know it when you see (in this case taste) it ;):).

And to go with these scraps, a multi-variety blend from the Maipo Valley in Chile. An inspired choice, even if I do say so myself. Just so smooth, textural, long and simply delicious. Punches way above its price-point.

I normally don’t eat dessert, but I just get the feeling that this little place will excel...

Still thinking while I try to keep you lot engaged ;):D.

Err, how big was that steak? By the look of it that’s what 2 of us woukd share and probably have a bit over. :p
Looks definitely yummy though.

It was typical-size sirloin like you might buy at Woolies or Coles, but a bit thicker. It was indeed yummy.

Not keen on the viper though.
That's not a snake.This is a snake-
