A Longer Trip to Hokkaido

It doesn't seem that long since our last trip/ however our next jaunt is rapidly approaching. A week today we fly to Sydney for the weekend with the family. On the Monday we fly to Darwin for 3 days. Why you may ask. Well we could get an SQ award DRW-SIN. Just a night in Singapore before flying another SQ J award to NRT. Again you might ask would yoy fly to NRT when it is a much easier commute into Tokyo. Simple the NRT flight is a day time flight and the 2 HND flights are at night.

As a precaution we booked a hotel at Shinagawa Station as the NEX express, the Keikyu railway and the limousine bus all service Shinagawa so we will pick whichever is the next to go when we arrive. Our Hotel is the Strings an IC hotel. We have 3 nights there. Decided to stop in Tokyo because it is Hydrangea season and we both really like Japanese hydrangeas. Most of the popular spots are at a fair distance from Shinagawa. But then i discovered a park just 800 metres from the hotel so no problems.

After that we fly out of HND to CTS on the JAL domestic bus. Fortunately doesn't take Too long. Catch the train to Sapporo and stay at the CP at the Station. We have been to Sapporo twice before and do like the place. After that we catch the Lavender Express to Asahikawa staying at the JR inn. Not only at the station but in a shopping mall with a Toyota rental car shop next door. The car was booked through Hertz but they basically act as an agent for Toyota rent a car. Exactly the same price but you can book earlier through Hertz

From then we will spend 3 weeks driving around Hokkaido. We will visit the south, east, north and west coasts.I will outline our itinerary in the next couple of days.

There were 2 major problems with this trip. The most important was that 6 weeks ago I didn't even know if I could do it. On May 3rd the morning we arrived back into Australia I got the sudden onset of severe right sided sciatica walking into the IC Sydney to check in. I blame on the fact that the red Bandana man was sitting outside the lobby. I could hardly walk and was only managing 1000 steps a day for the first week. We got home on the 6th and I immediately Doubled my dose of Amitrypyiline to try and reduce the severity. It had worked 23 years ago when I had left sided sciatica. It does take a while to work. 2 days later I saw our GP.the next day I was seeing the Neurosurgeon. I had an MRI 2 days later, back to the neurosurgeon and an L5 nerve block arranged for the 6th of June.
Of course by this time the pain had settled considerably after 4 weeks of my increased dose of Amitryptyline and I debated with myself whether to go through with the injection. I decided to do it. I have not had the sciatica since but about 6 hours later I developed a totally different back pain, quite severe at times which basically is assumed to be the osteoarthritis in my spine - it is a known complication of my haemochromatosis. I had a CT-Spect study on Thursday and results hopefully on Monday. However I can cope with this pain. It really is only severe getting out of bed or off Xray tables and some times getting out of a chair. No pain driving and just an ache walking so the trip is on.

Now the second problem is what title to have for this TR. I thought of unscrupulously stealing from @RooFlyer and calling it a Longer trip to Hokkaido but I appreciate his friendship. So next thought was seeing the success of what I wanted to achieve with my las TR I might call it Chasing the perect Orca shot as that is really what I would like but a bit repetitive. So I go back 10 years and use a description I used when Mrsdrron was in a Moon Boot.

So a run down on our driving around Hokkaido. We are using Toyota rent a car as we have used them 4 times in the past and always have good service. As well there is very little difference in cost with most other Japanese car rental companies. the problem this time is that most Japanese firms only open booking 3 months out. Summer i Hokkaido is definitely peak rental car time and I didn't want to miss out. Hetz came up with a price no different to the local companies so I booked there. Turns out in Japan book Hertz and you get a Toyota rent a car. So no problems.

This will be our longest Japanese driving experience and we will be on roads less traveled. So you need to know simple things such as how to fill your car if there is no driveway service. This is a very good article on driving in Japan.

From the site they referenced the English language site for info on rest areas for Hokkaido.

We pick up the car after 2 nights in Asahikawa and drive to Furano for 3 nights. This is the reason we first wanted to go to Hokkaido in Japan. it is a large area with many commercial flower farms. There are a few guides that I find useful and these are their articles on Furano.

And the local tourism office which I usually look at wherever we go.

Pictures from the web that hooked us.

To be continued.

That little snipped about fuel is handy. One thing I don't think they mentioned is often the self service servos have a separate little machine to accept the payment. Put the fuel in, print a barcode thing, take it to next machine, pay. Definitely confused me the first time I came across it

My first driving experience in Japan was in Okinawa, the bowser fuel colours look the same and I had no idea how to pay. Luckily for me a local pulled up and with my limited Japanese and a bit of sign guesting of what I wanted to do/ trying to achieve I was able to refill the car. Okinawa also has the freeway ETC toll gates.

Recently in Hokkaido, I was given a hybrid by Toyota. Didn't realise it was even a hybrid until I had been driving a while and it was very quiet . Driving about 1,200km I got 3 litres/100km. But it was a bit snug to drive.

The built in GPS had to have destinations entered by phone number, but if it didn't have a phone number (like a lookout), it had to be entered in Japanese. My own Google maps sufficed, which came up on the car's screen :)

I got the complete insurance (including roadside assist) and I don't recall it cost a lot extra. I asked about inspecting the car before I left and they said, 'Yes you can, but it makes no difference. Your insurance covers any damage you return it with, including prior damage' :).

I got 'no English' self-serve twice but there was always there who would help.

hmm sounds too good to be true. either that or the car has $0 RRP. still, wouldn't want to test it out🤣🤣

Either that or the company is intentionally trying to go bankrupt

My experience in renting cars in Japan is limited but was very much like as @RooFlyer described. You have the option for full insurance over basic which is around AUD8-10 per day. If you damage the car/wagon in any way it is covered and you can just hand it back with no questioned asked.

So...what's the catch? Even applecare can't outperform them. and they're apple
🤣🤣

No catch. I couldn't quite believe it, but read all the docs and that's what it was. It was about as much as @Matt_01 mentioned - for me, an extra $70 or so. Things are done (and driven) differently in Japan. Maybe as a result of the ridiculously low speed limits they have there.

After leaving Furano we head to Kushiro for 2 nights at the CP. We will visit the red crane reserve.

Also drive to Lake Akan and visit an Ainu village.

We probably eat here at least once. That is the CP behind Fisherman's wharf.

Then we drive to Rausu for a whale watching cruise. But lunch is probably going to be here.

Staying at the same place @RooFlyer was recently and the same cruise company.

Then a drive over the Mountains to Abashiri and the Dormy Inn. Actually picked as a back up place for a whale watching cruise if Rausu is cancelled or not wonderful.

From there we are heading for Wakkanai at the northern tip of Hokkaido. I was going to get the ferry to Rishiri Island for a nature walk but that is probably off now due to the back/ We will break the journey at Nayoro and a My Stays Inn.

The trip has begun and now sitting in the “ general “ lounge that is MCY. Staff are having a bad day apparently.
First QF check in. Agent wanted to check our carry on weights. No problem with that so I put my carry on and computer bag on the belt and it came up as 21.3 kg so I was told that I had to check the bag in. I said funny it is the same weight as my checked bag. She looked around, sent the bag on it’s way and hey presto my 2 bags came to 9.2kg.

But then came security. Both my bags were sent for secondary search. The problem with my computer bag was the cord for my computer. It’s always has been there and never queried for 10+ years.
For my carry on it was binoculars and my hearing aid batteries. What were they thinking?

Then while this was going on a passenger who had just arrived tried to exit through the body scanner.

Now sitting and having a coffee as QF903 is 45 minutes late on the departure board

So now the flight to SYD is 90 minutes late. At least we have a crew. From them the plane from SYD was diverted to BNE and then couldn’t continue so they are going to send another from BNE.
This is why we never schedule a same day international connection.

So the problem was that the original plane had a minor technical problem- they couldn’t operate the wipers so as no engineering staff at MCY diverted to BNE.
The passengers on the original flight were on the replacement plane so nearly 2 hours late to MCY.

Must say they have been proactive with domestic connections as some off to Canberra already rebooked. For ADL the present cabin crew assigned to that flight and the flight crew to the PER flight. Apparently only 1 couple with a dicey International connection but we have made up about 15 minutes and looks like no ATC delays.

So back to Hokkaido. After Wakkanai we drive down the West coast. obviously a road less travelled as only 1 hotel on booking .com at Rumoi. Fairly ordinary reviews. But should have good sunsets and seafood.

Next stop Otaru where we have been for a day trip from Hokkaido and really liked the place. So 3 nights here.

Then off to the Hilton Niseko for 2 nights. Basically as also driving down the South West coast of hokkaido and obviously not a major tourist route. There does seem to be a bit to do in summer.

Now why are we going down this coast. Why to see this.

We finally found a hotel that responded to my English emails so we will spend a night in Esashi.

It doesn't look a bad spot to stop.

Then on to Hakodate for 2 nights. We were there 7 weeks ago.

Then back to the New Chitose CP before our flight back to HND.
