A Magic Carpet, er Ship ride to Arabia.

Viking added it. Not on the original itinerary.

Like you, I wouldn't proactively choose Saudi as a destination but if I found myself there it would be an opportunity not to pass up. (Channelling Nick Cave and his invitation to the coronation :p)

I'm enjoying following along with this TR. Viking seem to have much nicer ships than I had been aware of before.

Great trip report, enjoying the posts and photos.

Did a similar cruise this time 5 years ago on Celebrity Constellation, Abu Dhabi to Rome.
Bypassed Saudi, 5 seas nights from Muscat to Aqaba. Men in Black joined us in Muscat, same deal English ex Forces.
Lucky enough to do the Suez Canal passage in day light hours. We were scheduled to commence around 11pm, started the passage
around 6am.

You’d love them.

Two amazing days. Petra and Luxor Valley of the Kings and Queens. Long long hot hot days. Around 105 F.

But first - we had our first jetty runners. We are in stateroom 8013. We heard the announcement. Along came the urgent announcement. "Would those people in stateroom 8....0.....1.......😳5 Phew - but our neighbours - come to guest services urgently. Then the ships horn. Blasted. Three times. It was well past All aboard time. Next thing we see our neighbours walking fast, but the old guy barely moving - to get to the gangway. Which had just been taken away. 😉. Next thing a car was sent screaming along the jetty to collect them. Today is the day we line up for the Suez Canal transit and we have to get to the meeting point at the designated time. Costs our ship around $400,000 USD whether we make it or not.

Mr P caught up with them as they reached their cabin, and they were so stressed. Our neighbours on the other side were also in a panic as they thought it was us and we had become friends. We were moving off as soon as they boarded the gangway.

Last night we saw our first ugly Australian. We were enjoying the guitarist - pictured earlier - when suddenly it was like fireworks going off. It was his guitar and it had shorted - he said it was the third time it happened. We had made friends with him earlier, a nice young British guy, and he was clearly upset. But then he moved to the grand piano. There were maybe eight people seated near him and we and about 5 others at the bar listening. He then asked for requests which he did. A more retiring couple asked for Come Away with me, which he played and sang beautifully and they were delighted. He then was in the middle of another song when the Ugly Aussie thought he'd play something very loudly on his phone, then his mate did the same. I thought it was a ring tone at first but it continued. I called out - Mute is a good thing, at the same time the pianist by now, simply stopped playing and looked at him. Which was very gutsy of him to do. Finally Ugly turned it off and he continued playing. But pianist was very rattled and apologetic. At which time MrP, bless him, went up to the pianist and congratulated him and got the two quieter gents to come up and wish him well. One of them said they had been a couple for over 25 years and it was the first time he'd seen his partner singing to music. At which point we left. MrP was thanked by the others in the bar as we left. What a jerk. That someone could deliberately sabotage a performers act is pathetic.

So. Back to Petra. Did I mention I liked Camels? I love Camels. I plan to ride one at the Pyramids. Anyway. At the Treasury there are many camels.

So it was hot by now. Crowded. Covid central back in those days. Dusty. My black shoes were grey. We continued on to the amphitheatre. We knew we had to do the long walk, uphill, back to the entrance. Not a pleasant idea.

IMG_3706.jpeg

Passed the vendors who weren't that aggressive. That was the fate for Luxor.
IMG_3707.jpeg

There is the option of a golf cart, cost being $USD 30 pp one way. This was the queue, the end not in sight. Takes 5 people only and only 13 carts. Takes about 30 minutes to get to top and return.
IMG_3708.jpeg

So walk it was. Hot. Uphill. With carts whizzing past. But we finally made it back. One guy had a thermometer. It registered 109F

Then it was lunch. Which was actually rather nice. A buffet.

IMG_3710.jpeg

Then back to the ship and great view for sail way. Bye Jordan.

So next morning - Safaga - port stop for Luxor and Valley of the Kings and Queens, the rare excursion that visits the tombs of King Tut, who happens to be the least significant Pharoah for Egypt but the most significant tomb for history, Phaorah SETI and Nefetari, the most loved wife of Ramses II. Such a long long and hot day. But worth every trickle bucket of sweat.
Egypt is arid. 96% being the Sahara Desert. It's salvation is the Nile. But Ethiopia wants to stop the Nile entering Egypt so that it can fill up its about to be finished Dam. Murray Darling Basin Valley revisited. There has been no resolution. Could easily start a War.

There are so many check points. They check the Reg, the nationalities of the people on board, and number. This happened about 15 times along the way. Egypt has an agreement with US that tourist safety is paramount. Tourism Is their No 1 earner.

We were told that we had an Armed guard on board and he was carrying a magnum. Underneath his seat he had an armalite rifle.

The first signs of green came after about 90 minutes. As we were nearing the Nile canals. And life.

Then Qena which runs along the Nile.

We then continued to travel, a total of just over 3 hours to get to the Valley of the Kings. It was blazingly hot. Entered the tourist area for the first comfort break in over 4 hours. Queue for the ladies loo was insane. I slipped the guard some Egyptian pounds thanks@rooflyer - amd slipped into the empty men's toilets. Others soon followed.

Then off to visit the tombs. We had one special access and one general. Phaorah SETI was special, he was also Father of Ramses II. It was oven hot. One lady didn't make it past the exit of the meeting place. We then trudged through the Valley. Ramses II is closed. Onwards to SETI. Many steps down and these weird boarded walks. But it was stunning and so many rooms.

The worksmanship is stunning. Each panel depicts a different phase of life, the negative confession, the pledges made and creatures to accompany him along the way, making sure the Pharoah is known to the Gods on the pathway to heaven. It's like some of the panels are embossed.

We had climbed down multiple stairs and ramps. It was so hot. So dry. So airless. Many struggled to get back up. Remember we are oldies.
I got to the top. I was bright red. Sweating. Nothing delicate here. And it is at this time that MrP knows it is his job to ensure I dont get arrested if someone just looks at me the wrong way. Even the armed guard offered me his seat. 😂. But I recovered.

Next up.

Now, I feel that having seen King Tut in his current state, I am on good enough terms to shorten his name. Well, in comparison with SETI his tomb is tiny. Which means, thank Amun, very few stairs. Because it's a general tomb it has more visitors. Seti and Nefertari tickets are super limited and super expensive. I understand why now.
IMG_3846.jpeg

IMG_3847.jpeg

IMG_3848.jpeg

His toes seem super long.

So, onwards, to the Valley of the Queens, across the road. And just realised I missed the boat on the Nile.

I'll back track to lunch. Luxor is on one side of the Nile, Luxor was largely created by Ramses II. Across the Nile is the desolate and therefore appropriate place for Pharoahs to be interred. Their tombs were prepared almost from their teens.

So in order to get from Luxor to Valley of the kings, we took a Dhabeya and which included lunch. Entry from a luxury hotel.

Yes ugly Australians are a real embarrassment. But they shouldn't play up when Mrsdrron is in the audience.
We always went to the Living Room at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit to hear their jazz pianist Randy Cannon. Yes his real name and he was well known to other performers. The older AFFers may have seen him on TV. He was the pianist on the first 1 -2 years of the initial TV series of the Love Boat.
One night the Buena Vista Social club was in Bangkok for some concerts. They came to hear and talk to Randy. This middle aged Aussie drunk business man was trying to impress his lady for the night and totally drowning out everyone else. Mrsdrron got up,walked over to him and said I couldn't care if you are trying to impress your friend but most of us are here for the music so STF up or get out.
In the next break we had a lovely talk with Randy and the Cubans who all thanked her.

So, with their experience, I guess the cruise line sets the "absolute, final deadline" to re-board at least a couple of hours before the actual one, to make the rendezvous?

Tne Houses of farmers are never finished. They keep adding to top layers for the next generation

Plus, certain taxes only kick in when the place is finished :) All over Egypt.

So we are anchored somewhere just south of the canal. Just had a pilot board. Lots of ships just hanging about. I thought we would be on the move now but not so and the captain isn’t exactly forthcoming with info. We have an historian start commentary at 10am.

Now we are charging through the waiting ships to be near the head of the queue to enter the canal . Military always goes first then passenger ships then tankers and containers. With a tug in between so there’s no evergreen disaster again.

We had to wait several hours because of 90 ships coming the opposite direction. We've just entered the Suez canal and are the lead ship. There are many ships behind us but we can only see one.

Im pretty much posting this live for a bit but will go back to Nefetari now.
