A message from Alan Joyce, Qantas CEO

I got the broadcast email, my first of these CEO emails, and had a couple of follow-up exchanges with Alan. Not many CEOs would take the time.

He appears to be a good bloke.

Wonder if it was his idea, I'm sure he has a large PR department with all that is going on. Second one i've had in as many months but they both came out 2 days after reading it in the news

You must be a high ranking NB-this QPNB hasn't got one nor the WP mrs.dr.ron.

I suppose that is because they are the offspring of two loyal WP's :p

OT if QF can send out these emails then surely AJ can see fit to send a welcome email to all FF attaining/ retaining status, I'm sure he has people to do these things for him. I know this has been posted in the QF suggestions thread and I think it would be a cute, no cost enhancement for QFF

Enhancement :o , forgive my young age, doesn't that mean somethingnbad is happening?

Yes quite right. It means that Qantas is about to remove something you value and replace it with a Fred Perry sausage roll, or a Marc Newson plastic box full of rubbish!

Just a FYI, Alan Joyce will be travelling on QF31 on Saturday. Of course in 1st class :p

He would gain a lot more of my respect if he sat in Y:mrgreen:

Its a shame, I've missed doing several of the great things in aviation. I miss the Concorde and get Fred Perry party pies and plastic boxes. :(

(Forgive my ranting)

Usually bad..very bad. So be afraid and don't be afraid to fly with other carriers. you may even enjoy it.

Ah cough an they were my favourite parts of the QF experience. A sausage roll on a bed of ....nevermind.

Or J. Best part of the plane is behind the curtains anyway. All FAs know that and that's why they spend most of the flight there. Hope he has an nice time there.

Please AJ check with the QF customer service and be prepared to wait for weeks for his lack of communication.

I would be more impressed if Alan Joyce lined up to check in at the International Economy check in line at peak time. After he stands there for over an hour, and then sits in a middle seat somewhere in Y, non bulkhead, non exit row.

I also hope that he uses regular immigration lines, not express or crew lanes.

Even better, perhaps he could take a domestic JQ Mel-Syd flight, have to collect his bags, make his own way to T1 to recheck.

Now if only the staff could resist the temptation to act any differently around him.....

Why would you be more impressed? You think if he spent a little time suffering like whY pax that he would magically make all those problems disappear?

Frankly I think one of the reasons that it is so hard for whY pax at the airport is simply to make the premium options feel more valuable. If there werent queues in whY and the seats were larger immigration was quicker - why on earth would anyone fly in J?

I hope he takes some time to talk to the pax across the whole aircraft - that would probably be more revealing than spending an hour in a queue.

I would also hope that he would walk the aircraft and say hello and chat to people in various classes. Now that would make the most of the opportunity.

The warm welcome is what I'm looking forward to, oh yeah, double SC's would be nice as well. Is it only Platinum flyers getting this email? SWMBO and my cat have not had the email yet...

I received mine around the same time as serfty... I do have some A388 travel booked so maybe that could have been a catalyst?

1/ yes I agree it would be good if he does take the time to walk the whole aircraft.

2/ at the risk of being controversial, I think that there are a great many people on this board that look down on those who are not WP or SG.
I wouldn't expect it to be any different for Alan Joyce.

What would it achieve?

Well for starters it might be informative for him when deciding on the required level of check-in staff.

Secondly, it might be informative when it comes to making decisions on the benefits levels for QP or PS.

(and yes, I realise QP and PS can still priority checkin for international flights).

Lastly, you are right, one way to increase the perception of benefits for those with status, is to purposely devalue the experience for those without status.

IMHO the business and process improvements that Qantas can gain from senior management actually going through all levels of the check-in, boarding, ticketing etc process could significantly help the business.

From my experience of larger industries the disconnect between senior management and staff "at the coal face" is huge. Quite often simple process changes can improve flow, profit and also improve the lot of the employee.

It is not even the case of senior management coming up with the changes, those doing the job are the ones who really know how to make things better. A little time spent "at the "coal face" will pay dividends.

I hope Alan Joyce does take the time to talk to passengers, in all cabins, and crew. A good CEO will understand how important this contact is, and the positive effect it can have on employees and customers................... if it is sincere.

All sounds like a candidate for undercover boss

Yes, and I think it would also go a long way to improving relations with and the morale of front line staff.

It would also do wonders for Alan Joyce's image. Especially as so many people are skeptical of a LCC man managing a "premium airline".
