A screwdriver too far?

By any reasonable definition, Vegemite is a paste.
As is boot polish and axle grease :p . Some find it difficult to determine the difference.

On Vegemite..

My 16 year old daughter was in France last year travelling by herself to a host family...

At the domestic terminal on her way to Brittania.....the security people confiscated her jar of Vegemite (intended as both a gift for her host family as well as for own use...) because after one sniff they would not believe it could actually be a food!!!!!!

SO how many people put their correction pens or liquid paper bottles into there zip top bags? I have just checked my bag for my flight to NZ, and found my correction pen that has travelled with me for the past 18 months, and I never had a problem.

I forgot to put my eyedrops in a plastic ziplock bag with all other liquids, paste and gels - I realised it after going through security a few times when I couldn't find my eyedrops in the ziplock bag (because I assumed it was in the ziplock bag, I never thought to look elsewhere - but eventually found it).

I must admit I am becoming rather fond of this ziplock bag method though - it justifies (to myself, in my mind) not carrying a nice toiletry bag, and a ziplock bag is lighter, cheaper and less bulky.

I've often wondered when pens and pencils as a whole are going to get banned. Especially after Vanstone's "pencil in the brain" comment. It just seems like it's becoming all a bit silly.

I am surprised they allow glass bottles, especially duty free alcohol, in carry on. A broken bottle with jagged edges makes for a good weapon, just as useful as a screwdriver, corkscrew, metal knife, metal fork, paddlepop stick etc....

Might I direct your attention to post #13 of this thread ... :-|

I understand the "being seen to be doing something" point, also - but we had one instance in my company about two years ago where the pax had her laptop security cable confiscated - we were all sent an email saying we should put the security cables with our checked luggage. The thing that bemused me at the time was that the security goons didn't also confiscate her laptop power cables, which I would have thought would have been just as effective at strangling someone.

I have long thought that is was odd that I could buy glass bottles after the security points and carry them on - how easy would it be to smash a bottle on an armrest and.. viola! instant weapon - much more effective than any screwdriver, knitting needle or nail clippers, and much more intimidating (which imo is more the point than how effective any weapon is in when trying to threaten a victim)

What do you mean buy them and carry them on ... haven't you heard of CityFlyer? After 4pm on weekdays, it comes with complementary wea##ons, just make sure it's not a public holiday.

Well yes - but I have pretty much only been doing International flights recently, so that was front of mind - point taken...

Umm the clippers/scissors is I think to stop people people cutting the phone cables that the Cabin Crew use to warn the pilots.

Bet it wouldn't be hard to simply rip the cord loose with a solid pull.

I see where you are going with that - all hands to be removed before board?

My experience of travelling on a public holiday is that if I remind the crew manager that there is nothing in the Cityflyer description that exempts public holidays from free drinks, that free drinks are forthcoming... obviously I have always just checked the Cityflyer page before doing so in case they updated it

When I was in Switzerland recently my hosts were embrassed to tell me that at ZRH the airside souvenir shop sells Swiss Army knives. When I departed the next day I took the time to check it out. Sure enough, after check-in, after immigration I visited the souvenir shop and they definately do sell the real thing.

The catch is: it is before the very thorough screening. They confiscate them. The Swiss citizens are embarassed by the practice.

I settled on two chocolate replica knives. The kids thought they were funny but ate them anyway. (within 2 mins of my arrival home.)

Recycled back to the souvenir shop?

Surely not in Switzerland but I bet it would help keep the taxes down

(OT) When in ZRH, I can recommend catching the S bahn to Dübendorf and taking a ride in a JU52 ( http://www.airforcecenter.ch/navy/mainnav.php? langy=e ) . It was one of the most enjoyable flights we have ever done.

I saw a boomerang confiscated at AKL transfers security today from a woman who appeared to be a tourist. Security person said that boomerangs are not allowed past security. The offending boomerang didn't look like anything more than a souvenir item and was made of wood.
