Until he spills his coffee on itI want my pilot to have a paper map, much more reliable than a battery powered screen.

I imagine Virgin aren't too concerned about this and it is their W/Comp insurers defending the action. What they will be very concerned about is the news reports still referring to them as a 'budget airline'....

As a pilot I still prefer to have a map! mind you I am only VFR so I have to have a paper map!
I have never used an electronic chart but have RAAF friends who use the iPad for charts and love them.I would like my pilot to be able to READ a paper map.:!::mrgreen:.

A couple of comments:
- IFR paperwork are charts and not maps and they do not topographical details on them.
- Charts are amended about every six weeks and there are sufficient page changes that it is very easy to have one wrong.
- It is part of the letdown checklist to verify chart dates as current.
- There is a set of these per pilot.
- I would not worry about battery life as this will also be covered as part of the checklist and you would be very unlikely to lose both iPads at once.
- The ability to expand the page as per an iPad can be beneficial with the amount of detail on some charts.
- The iPad is infinitely lighter than a bunch of charts and letdown plates.
