I want my pilot to have a paper map, much more reliable than a battery powered screen.

I imagine Virgin aren't too concerned about this and it is their W/Comp insurers defending the action. What they will be very concerned about is the news reports still referring to them as a 'budget airline'....

I agree that Virgin won't be too concerned, (that is why we have insurance) and it will more than likely be Virgin's Liability insurer (not w/comp) as most litigants seem to go this way at present mainly because of a lump sum payout with liability claim. Also, from a libility aspect once this matter is litigated, Virgin (although a part to the proceedings) becomes a witness only; has to supply/give evidence on facts, with the claim being between the Pilot v Insurance Company. I also suspect at some point down the track the pilot will be offered "nuisance money' for him to simply go away as it is cheaper to do this than the insurer paying legal bills.

I think the pilot just needs to harden up and get on with it. If i could get a million bucks everytime i get a bit sore from manual labor at work, i wouldnt have to work for the rest of my life, neither would my kids or my kids kids

I have never used an electronic chart but have RAAF friends who use the iPad for charts and love them.

A couple of comments:
  1. IFR paperwork are charts and not maps and they do not topographical details on them.
  2. Charts are amended about every six weeks and there are sufficient page changes that it is very easy to have one wrong.
  3. It is part of the letdown checklist to verify chart dates as current.
  4. There is a set of these per pilot.
  5. I would not worry about battery life as this will also be covered as part of the checklist and you would be very unlikely to lose both iPads at once.
  6. The ability to expand the page as per an iPad can be beneficial with the amount of detail on some charts.
  7. The iPad is infinitely lighter than a bunch of charts and letdown plates.

Ahh yes.. My bad.. ERSA on an iPad would be good..

Eons ago I used to brief Caribou and C130 pilots on drop zone locations using an Army map.
As they were good at charts and bad on maps, several would pull out their Shell road maps (from their 18kg bags) and I would mark the DZ locations for them. They usually had no problems after that.
