A380 in Y - best seats (80A/80K/71D/50C etc.)

Concise seat test: 69D
Guilt free recline seems to work, as I wasn't bumped into at all during the flight (or I was just totally knocked out). Flight was full, but it's quite nice to be able to not worry about un-reclining the seat during meal time. Although I did get a few bumps when 70E or 71D (not sure who) was having a play on the screen - which would happen on virtually all seats anyway.

I should've also added that this part of the cabin is served last for the meals, but when you are on a redeye with full recline all the way, meals probably aren't your priority. :)

A slight disadvantage of 80A (from the person in 79B) :( :

I didnt think you were allowed to rest any body parts on that part of the plane...either way I'd be giving them a nudge to get through. Hopefully theyd get the hint; better to annoy one person than the two sitting next to you.

Well said blackcat.

Yes when I booked 80A on the first leg to Singapore the 79B occupant placed their bag and various goods in front of my feet. I was not too impressed and subtly put my feet on his belongings.

Next leg to London I made sure I owned the space and put my blanket & pillow etc on the floor in front of me.

ouch, that sucks Austman!

good idea ellen10, I will have to remember that one!

My only time in 80A was when I was one of the last few to board and the person in 79B already put his (and his travelling partner 79A's) stuff in the side magazine "seat pocket". He apologised because there was nowhere else to put it but I didn't mind - 80B was blocked and I might have put the menu in that seat back pocket, not that it was a big deal...

I'm surprised they don't have any "side storage" for those seats, there certainly are in most other Y exit rows on different aircraft?

A quick buzz to the FA should fix that problem... although I've also seen the pax at 79C placing their feet on the crew seat... (although I suppose a quick buzz to the FA would fix it also).

And while I'm here... just got off Nancy operating as QF1 today, on the SYD-SIN sector. If you didn't see the rego (or the name), you most certainly wouldn't notice anything different from all the other A380s in the fleet.

Flying from MELB - LAX on the 23rd November, returning to MELB on the 5th Dec, managed to book 80A & B on the way there and 80K & J on the return trip. Looking forward to it. Extra leg room will be muchly appreciated!

Hi Guys, first post here.

I’ve got my first flight on the A380 on Sunday (SYD-HKG) andwas really after a window so paid the $20 to reserve one. Without actually knowing what I was doing, Imanaged to secure 80A, which I guess turns out was a pretty good choice!

I’ve just got a couple of questions for the experts, hopefully some of the more experienced A380 passengers can answer:

1. As there’s no seat in front of 80A, does thatmean all carry-on has to be Overhead?
2. What’s the deal with in-seat entertainment? I assume the screen comes from the side?
3. How good is the window placement in 80A? From the maps it looks like the window mightbe a little far back, meaning you have to turn quite a lot to see out of it.

Looking forward to this trip, so hopefully I don’t lose thisseat for some reason!

Way to go! I have always found 80A to be very comfortable.

1. As there’s no seat in front of 80A, does thatmean all carry-on has to be Overhead?

Yes. The FA is seated just in front of you so you can't even sneak anything into your "personal aisle".

2.What’s the deal with in-seat entertainment? I assume the screen comes from the side?

The IFE is the same as those in exit-rows. Swings up out of the right armrest.

3.How good is the window placement in 80A? From the maps it looks like the window mightbe a little far back, meaning you have to turn quite a lot to see out of it.

Window placement is very good, I've found. Slightly forward of the seat but by no means awkward. I've even managed to get some great pictures of landscapes without any difficulty.

Great, thanks fresherbill!

Couldn't believe getting it only a few days out, after reading this thread...

Lets just hope I don't lose it to a real frequent-flyer :)

For take-off and landing, yes.
There is a side wall magazine pocket in front of you which is usually stuffed with 3 seats' worth of safety cards, sick bags and Qantas magazines which may have room for a small item if you need, or even the seat-back pocket of 80B if vacant. Otherwise when the seatbelt sign turns off you can get up as usual and leave blankets and whatnot in front of the seat in front of you.

I have just reserved 80k & 80j sin to syd in March next year, I was amazed when I then stumbled onto this thread.

I see some comments on here (been reading for half an hour now) with reference to the fact that 80J, which will most likeley be my seat, is an uncomfortable spot to sit, can anyone who has had this seat please comment as to if I will be able to stretch my feet out under the seet in front of me or place my bag under the seat? If not I think I may change to 71d & 71e so that we both have a comfortable flight home. Thanks in advance for any comments.

We had 80A/B seats Lon to Syd late last year. Same postioning as 80J/K.
We shared the 80A seat, however the 80B seat was fine. Yes you will be able to stretch out your legs in 80J. We are both tall and had no problem. Added advantage is the ease of exit out through 80A. Of course 80A passenger has to move for you to exit but it is easier then getting out passed the aisle seat passenger. Especially if the passenger in front is reclining.
Enjoy!

oops I meant past not passed!

Hi,

Just read this thread, and while there is some great info I've just got a few questions?

I recently booked from SYD to LA return, and having looked up the seating plans I knew 80A or K would probably be the best in economy. So I paid $40 bucks to use 'Advance seat selection' and I choose 80K both ways. I figure I will miss the sunset flying out over the pacific but should see the sunrise again a few hours before landing at KLAX.

From what I can see the bottom half of the seating section are take up full, but it looks like they are done logically as in they are people who haven't paid to specify seating, and so they are just being filled from the back of the plane to the front.

Anyway my questions are:

If you have flown 80K, did you regret it? Would you have rather ed a regular seat? If so why?

Do they let you rest your legs on anything? Like a bag or something? All the other seats have little feet rest cage things in the back of the seat in front.

The tray, so where is it stowed? Do you have to balance it on your lap? Or is it fixed in place somehow? Will somehow whos a bit 'larger' (AKA fat) have problems with this? Is it as big as other trays? Would you be able to use a laptop on it?

The TV, where is it stowed? How is it attached? Via cables? Do you have to hold it or again is it attached to something? You cant use it during take off/landing? That sucks because I'm really keen to see the outside view, it's one of the main reasons I'm flying qantas.

Those are my main questions. I imagine I will get a lot of comments like "OH wow you got the best seat?!" and "Why didn't I get that seat!" etc.. ;)

I flew home from London last year in 80K. No footrest which is a bit inconvenient, but outweighed by having room to stretch out with no seat back in front of you. I didn't have a carryon bag I could use as a footrest. Tray table is stowed in the arm rest. TV is also stowed there and pops up.

I think "larger" people would struggle a bit with any airline seats these days. I hated the seats on the QF A380. Too narrow, hard and uncomfortable. QF cattle class seats on the old Jumbos from years past were never as uncomfortable as these new seats in my humble opinion. These seats are so narrow now. Having said that, on the same trip, I travelled from Melbourne up to Singapore on SIA A380, and the difference was remarkable. SIA was far and away more comfortable, the whole ambience much better, and of course no surly unhelpful staff.

If nothing else, the extra leg room will enhance your trip.

Many of those questions are answered in the earlier posts of this thread. Take the time to read them - there's even some photos - you won't be disappointed.

Welcome to AFF andyroo54!,

No regrets other than being able to see what the person in 79B or 79J is doing.

Do they let you rest your legs on anything? Like a bag or something? All the other seats have little feet rest cage things in the back of the seat in front.
Strictly no but you may get away with it.

The tray, so where is it stowed? Do you have to balance it on your lap? Or is it fixed in place somehow? Will somehow whos a bit 'larger' (AKA fat) have problems with this? Is it as big as other trays? Would you be able to use a laptop on it?
In the armrest window side.

In the armrest aisle side. Just be careful the person in 80B or 80J wanting to use your side to exit the row. You need to interrupt what you are doing. I have not had this happen to me yet but I would politely ask them to exit via the aisle.

You cant use it during take off/landing? That sucks because I'm really keen to see the outside view, it's one of the main reasons I'm flying qantas.

Of course if you're lucky enough to get an empty 80B/K then you can use their screen to put on the outside view during take off. Not idea due to the angle but the aisle seat person shouldn't object too much.

So with the new seat config on the A380 - I'm finding that the seat maps on EF aren't working..??

Is everyone else having the same issue?
