Yes, after 18 months of inactivity. You can always buy a few miles, credit some flights or car hire etc to start the 18 month clock ticking again.

I registered for the Gold offer first, then later the Platinum one once it was posted here - thanks knasty! I wonder whether one will trump the other (or if either will work!).

Your missing the earn and burn rates being a lot better with AA.

I will dip my toes into the AA pond later this year as I will have excess SCs, well past WP requal needs.

True, one had to think of earn / burn rather than status tiers which are two separate matters.

I'm curious if they're only valid until the end of the year, or if I could perhaps request upgrades before Jan 1 for flights that depart after this date (in my case, I'm looking at visiting the USA again in April).

I haven't done it myself, but from my reading of the AA website the upgrades are only applied in the last day(s) anyway.

Important for Aussie based travelers to realise that you may need 4 flights a year on AA metal to retain status of any sort, if you are going no where near the USA you may need to think again.

In my personal experience, that rule has not been applied. While it exists in the membership terms and conditions, AA has not applied it to members - unlike other OneWorld airlines with the same rule such as QF and BA. For several years I never set foot on an AA aircraft of an AA flight number yet retained Platinum and Exec Platinum status by reaching the EQP/EQM thresholds.

But since its in the terms and conditions, there is always a chance they will impose the rule in the future.

If your employer buys B class airfares or higher then the earn rate on AA is better,

If on the other hand you pay for your own cheap airfares which book randomly into E, N, O, Q class then I would not bother. Then there is the credit card spend to consider. And Woolworths Everyday Rewards.

So the statement about earn and burn on AA being better than Qantas comes with a HUGE YMMV attached and is not a one size fits all....

Agree totally, have pretty much paid my own way this year and enjoy the PE $1000 return ex SIN that racks up some very nice AA miles, like anything having all your eggs in one basket is not good thinking,

I don't see how it makes a difference who pays for the fares. The earn rate is the same if I pay or if my employer pays.

All my trips in the last year have been booked in V, O, Q and two sectors in L, each being the cheapest available fare for the trip I was taking. In fact, I have been booking on codeshare flights operated by QF because they are considerably cheaper than the QF fare. So I get a cheaper fare and better earn rate - that is a win for all concerned.

Exactly. But its not just a difference between expensive fares verses cheap fare either. I have found one of the biggest variable factors to be the "airline" rather than the fare basis.

unfortunately its not a promotion I can undertake, already being AA Platinum and Lifetime Gold.

AAdvantage status is shown on the My Account page on aa.com when singed-in. Under the initial banner, there is a line with your name, AAdvantage membership number and status.

Are you referring to international flights, QF operated with an AA flight no?

How do you work out the EQM etc... ?

Just for clarification (for an AA newbie), your codeshares are picked from QF website as usual, or you go through AA.com

What I meant was would any QF coded flight be claimed (say at check in) to AA, or it has to be AA coded flight to start with ?
