Looks like feelings expressed (http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/open-discussion/i-can-see-why-aa-43588.html) on AFF are mirrored elsewhere!

A STINGING opinion piece has shamed American Airlines for flying a plane held together with masking tape on flight that never ended. Author Gary Shteyngart gets mad. Very mad. And when he gets mad, he lets the whole world know.
His opinion piece in the New York Times this weekend has left American Airlines red faced and ducking for cover. The airline is already battling bankrupcy and a dispute with pilots. Now the public are turning on America's once famous airline.
“You, American Airlines, should no longer be flying across the Atlantic. You do not have the know-how,” Shteyngart writes. “You do not have the equipment. And your employees have clearly lost interest in the endeavor. Like the country whose name graces the hulls of your flying ships, you are exhausted and shorn of purpose. You need to stop.”

An absolute beat-up with precious little real content: (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/30/o...rip-turns-kafkaesque.html?_r=2&smid=fb-share&)
...

...One of the overhead baggage compartments was held together with masking tape. Halfway across the Atlantic you decided to turn Flight 121 back because your altimeter wasn’t working. Some of us were worried for our safety, but your employees mostly shrugged as if to say, Ah, there goes that altimeter again.
Delays happen, they are happening more at AA currently than normal - this too will pass.

As for "masking Tape" if have seen some on most carrier I have travelled - on a OHSB? .. meh ...

That said, as someone going one a DONE5 with the majority of the flight being domestic with AA in November, it doesn't fill me with much hope!

They have a lot of older aircraft, but a big order for new aircraft too, so when they get to the other side of their bankruptcy issues, they'll presumably have started renewing their fleet, and then this whole article will be turned on its head. As for the safety issue, there's always beat ups with delays, but I'd rather fly an airline that acknowledges the issue than ignores it...

An apocalyptic scenario: an employee of the world’s worst airline assigned to the world’s worst border crossing at the world’s worst airport.

I'm confused. I thought Mr ****eyngart was flying from Paris to New York on AA and the flight turned back to LHR, yet he is clearly saying that he flew Air France and landed in LA??????

:p
