There are 3 hotels in Pattaya and not one of them is participating in this promotion for the dates I have tried.

Not sure why I bother clicking on the email link.

Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam: between 14th March and 31st July 2014

You can get specials on those dates?

I have trip in December/January and then February. Next one is June and a little too early to commit just yet.

The sale came at a decent time for me, but unfortunately too many restrictions! Was thinking of Budapest next month prior to new job starting, as that was the only destination I looked at that price and property wise stood out, but confound EK for not flying there. Not game enough to hop on AY either (from a comfort perspective, but more importantly a points earning perspective!)

AY will yield more SCs though if that is any consideration than a QF/EK combo e.g PER to SIN, SIN to HEL, HEL to BUD ... so that would be 3 plane changes.
Points can be manufactured but those confounding SCs, so I'm always on the SC prize.

I do admit EK is 'better' vs AY but for me I find AY great bang-for-buck in J.

I'll be back of the bus though, and going via SIN no matter which I choose. I am going to wait til Monday and see if anything else pops up, otherwise forget about it. I am not that desperate for a trip (and budget is small for this one), all told - just seems a shame not to do something with the time.

Via SIN you'll end up with an older A340 which is due for a refit through 2014 (probably late 2014).
But I have seen that flight to HEL often lightly loaded in Y. So if you can check prior may be scoring an extra seat or two could be on the cards.
We kind of work on the notion that if there is an option to travel, even if it needs to be in Y, then we take the plunge and just make it work. In our 'poorer' days when it was always Y (BFOD) we just prayed to the upgrade-gods and we found ourselves often surprised. We also put word out to friends and family that we were travelling and again was often surprised with the appearance of lounge passes, express arrival / departure cards. Again we just saw it all as part of the experience.
