Advice on champagne

Mrscove has been a teetotaler from about a month after we started going out. Designated drivers are a real plus in a long term relationship and I guess it saved quite a bit over the past 46 years. I guess that explains why I have a full cellar.

We take turns being the driver, but if we expect a big night we catch PT.

Have tried but wouldn't say it is commensurate with a $90 price tag... Also, I prefer a drop that's not too sweet and this has a touch too much sugar for my palate.

OK. Might wait till I can grab it cheaper in the States. I do like sweet wines so might sit ok with me.
 
Occasionally you see negative references to Moet - biggest selling label in the world is it not? I guess they must be all wrong?

It's ok, but a lot of it is about brand and marketing. Moet is probably the lowest level entry champagne in places like China where you would want an appropriate brand to 'impress' your friends. Everyone knows Moet.

Moet is the Johnnie Walker Black Label of Champagne. That reliable, non-offensive, well known, safe choice if you're not an expect.

I used to think that the Dutch origins of the name "Moët" explained the pronunciation.
Then I discovered their Dutch family name was LeClerc (a very French-sounding name), and their ancestor was given the name "Moët" by Charles VII.
The name was a reward for fighting beside Jeanne d'Arc to retake the city of Riems from the English to enable Charles' coronation.
I no longer pretend to understand the pronunciation.

Sigh, Puska... A cheap shot.:) This is AFF after all. Some members have occasionally managed to get outside Canberra.:)

The usual trouble is convincing the young 'waiter' or FA of how to pronounce it.

Dont stop there AC - feel free to tell us what the 'experts' drink in the ~$50 Champers range?

I'm not saying 'experts' don't drink Moet - please don't read in something that isn't there. I drink Johnnie Walker in my collection too, even though I have several dozen single malt bottles.

Like Penfolds or Wolf Blass it's a "safe" choice for someone who has to buy a red for a dinner party, Moet is something that someone who doesn't know anything about champagne can buy without worrying to much about what the drinkers will think. It's world-wide popularity is built on the same formula that Johnnie Walker, or Colgate or Nescafe is built on. It's popularity isn't because it's great value. But it wouldn't have the position it has if it were bad. That doesn't preclude anyone else from drinking it.

Edit: back to your question: if you want to go a bit off the beaten track, I've bought Jacquart, Charles Petit & Cie, Ayala, Vilmart & Cie, Dosnan, Vazart-Coquart etc, all for around the $50 mark in the past few months. I'm not a champagne drinker - these are for the SO who does manage to get through a fair bit of the stuff somehow.

I'm not in Canberra? Dom is easy. Maybe they should stick to Dom.
 
I personally am an unabashed Moët drinker / enjoyer - along with Mumm, Taittinger, Veuve, Ayala, Lanson and Bollinger - those 6 labels are always in my cellar - I was so happy to see Tommy express his reservations about Billiecart earlier - my taste buds just don't rate that drop - all above readily and regularly buyable sub $50 - a price that is appealing to me to have open bar policy in our house - wanna Champers? - anybody can come share a bottle or 3 with us anytime.

So again open ended request to anybody who has contrary views on Moët - or indeed others listed - what do you rate higher - input from 'experts' warmly welcomed.

I was just commenting on why I think Moet is #1 in bottles of Champagne sold. I didn't realise that this required me to then show what champagnes "experts" drink instead. I don't even drink champagne (much), but that doesn't mean one can't identify the marketing components that make a particular label successful where others aren't. Sorry I can't help you with your question - I think you're asking the wrong person.
