Advice on champagne

Any specials going lately? I'm struggling to find Taittinger for any less that $50, which isn't bad but I had much better deals last year at around $40/bottle in a case.
My stocks are getting frighteningly low! Only two bottles left in the wine cabinet and going fast!!

We're also getting low, only a couple of Taittinger and Veuve left (plus some more $$ champagnes for special occasions)

Hi Lizzi,
Just a quick one... I know earlier that we had a discussion about half bottles vs big ones... Your idea about preference (if I remember correctly) was more about preservation than quality... but I was just wondering if you thought the half bottle was a better product??
I recently had a half bottle of Billecart at a restaurant and thought it was so good (haven't had Billi for a while) so I opened one of the "normal" bottles from my cellar...
I thought that the big bottle was lacking in flavour compared to the half bottle...
Now I know there are massive differences in atmosphere, possible age, etc but curious to know if you have had any thoughts??
By the way.. all are NV...
Thanks :)

No, I don't think I've even seen that... At that price point I generally head to the Lanson Gold vintage (approx $55?) and don't look at anything else. I need to explore more!!

I quite liked the Lanson Gold '04. But when we tried the '05 I thought it was battery acid. I suppose that highlights the perils of vintage champagne.

Dans also have a secret label vintage champagne at $55. Does anyone know what it is ?

bad bottle maybe? I had a similar reaction the first time I tried the black, which I put down to a dodgy bottle because the next time I (unknowingly) had it, it was quite drinkable.

Or, different folks, different strokes!

Entirely possible. I'm not adverse to giving it another go, especially since I do like the 04 and the Black. However at that price point I'll be reaching for the Bollinger.

Yup, for me it's more that I don't want to waste the other half of a bottle, like the poor unfinished Ruinart B de B in the fridge at the moment, left over from Friday night.
I remember being told in France that the smaller bottles are generally looked down upon a bit by connoisseurs because they have a higher air-to-wine ratio within the bottle, which is why magnums etc are considered better. But maybe the smaller bottles age more quickly because of that, and that's why it tasted better to you? Totally random thought. Who knows :)

Cheers,
Lizzi

Quite likely the case. Champagne is such a fickle beast and the easiest of wines to spoil. Bottle variation happens a lot.

All clear?

Of cancer - YES!
(OT- but the genetics stuff in my blood is doing my head in. They currently think I have 2 different genetic blood issues. Basically a disorder that over clots and a disorder that stores too much iron - which if not treated does lead to cancer. What the heck is happening here? But so relieved I don't currently have cancer, (obviously) the rest now detected can be managed - by weekly blood letting of all things if things go as they are heading. A 'work in progress'. )

Been so stressed this week I haven't touched a drop.

I was healthy 3 weeks ago!

Anyone know a vampire?

Scary news Pushka - but it is better to identify, diagnose and manage, rather than find out too late.

Glad you are ok.
