Advice on whisky

Sometimes the Lagavulin 16YO is offered <$100. A nice drop.

Scapa is my favorite, but very hard to get.

BenRiach sherry finished for my wife. Likewise "tuff" to find. She has a better nose and palate for these things than I, so I can never buy anything cheap or ordinary.

Hard to go past a good Scotch for a quiet evening in. Needs quiet and time to appreciate the experience.
Nick have the Scapa Skiren for $125. Myself have not tried Scapa before.

Sydney airport have it for $115

Dalmore 12YO is a favourite of mine, but rarely see it discounted. https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_904295/the-dalmore-12-year-old-scotch-whisky-700ml

Hibiki 12YO is absolutely delicious, but absurdly expensive in Australia https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_784467/hibiki-12-year-old-whisky-700ml
Can be had for ~$100 in Japan if you have friends going that way.

Jura Superstition is also very nice, but I rarely see it discounted https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_917714/jura-superstition-whisky-700ml

As you can see, big fan of the single malts. I also don't like things overly peaty/smoky. A little hint is nice, but otherwise I find not as pleasant to drink as the smoother, more malty/barley flavoured whiskeys.

What Carribean/South American rum would you recommend?...

The answer for this is clear to me - Ron Botran 18

When Caribbean rum is sold, the number does not refer to the age of the entire product - so Ron Botran 18 is a blend of rums with different ages UP TO 18 years. Most of the content is younger.

Personally I love Botran - not as sweet as Panamanian rums such as Abuelo. Try and find Botran 18 and IMHO you have a great benchmark from where to start.

Given this is a whisky thread I offer this advice in the spirit (sorry) of comparable tipples :)

Laga16 , was the start of my liking for the Islay & Skye products, see it locally at big retailer round $82 at times, usually $106'ish.
Not too much bite to it, but quite a distance from Speyside. Sometimes these island single malts are all smoke and alcohol. And some mainlands all fruit and berries. Nicely pitched and very flavourful; I know I'm drinking a good Scotch, but I don't have to dress up in kilt and sporran for it.

One of the best whiskies I've ever had - if not the best - was Japanese. Miyagikyo 12YO. My notes are just one word: "Gorgeous!"

Highland Park. And when an offer like post 52 comes along you start the to believe in Santa and the Easter bunny !!!

Good to know my current tipper is considered one of the best. ;)
I agree it's good, 4 out of 5. The Bruichladdich is more elegant.

You sure make life difficult for me, the Botran 18 I believe is not available here in OZ. ;)
OakBarrel have the Botran Reserva for $99.
Is the Ron Zacapa 23 or Zacapa Centenario 23 from the same stable as Botran just as good?

can comment on your question but will say the Zacapa Centenario 23 is very easy to drink, but if you like scotch whisky then you'd be able to get something just as good $20ish cheaper.

I have a whisky question, if someone gave you a nice bottle, which out knowing the price, would you be able to accept and enjoy it? Say a 40 year old whisky? I recently had this conversation with a friend. I happened to have a bottle of something special and I said oh I'll give it to. He said he could not accept it because he would not be able to enjoy it knowing how expensive it was. Oh a funny note, I was able to find him a "value" 40 year old....

Whisky is for drinking. Spirit does not age in bottle. If given an age/ancient bottle (of pedigree that is ;)) I would be very thankful.
However since it's 40 years old probably it's very rare and might be quite expensive. On that account it would be "wasted" on those who does not appreciate the finer qualities.
It would be wasted on me if you present me with a Karuizawa whisky. (distillery now closed) :D

You can give it to me and I will be certain to enjoy it without concern :)

Sometimes wonder if DM "runs out of stock" when prices from competitors get too competitive ?

Thoughts ?
