Advice on whisky

Have a $15 birthday voucher to use at Sydney airport duty free. No Glenfarclas, but available Bowmore 15, Balvenie 15, Ardbeg Smoketrails, Bruichladdich Laddie 8.
Weighing on what to purchase or none at all.

Always compare to Dan’s price/online too. Duty free but huge margins (to pay what I assume is extortionate rent, as one obvious cost)

When in doubt buy them all.:)

Balvenie 15 , or Laddie, or Bowmore would be my selection.

I've been on the hunt for some Japanese whiskey to bring back home while visiting the country, but after tasting a number of them at various restaurants/bars, I'm not particularly impressed with them, even the a 12yr age statements.

Found a liquor store in Kyoto that had Glenlivet 18yr for $75 AUD, so bought a couple of those. Fingers crossed no breakage in the suitcase. I know the 18yr cops some slack for being reduced to 40%, but the price was too good to pass up.

The good Japanese whiskeys went up about 500% so anything generally affordable (to me at least) isn’t as drinkable.
Hakushu 12 was one of the better drops at $50ish.
Thankfully I got half a case at that level before it jumped

I always purchase Talisker Dark Storm because it's ONLY available duty-free. I was even at the Talisker distillery in Scotland last year and they didn't have it there. Definitely one for the peat-lovers such as yourself!

I had the Hakushu 12 a few nights ago. At $50-80, I wouldn't be unhappy, but anything more and I'd be spewing.

Nowadays duty free exclusives are only in name only. Possible to obtain online. Maybe due to covid MCO unsold stocks. Eg Talisker storm available at DrinksSociety at slightly higher ar $155 cf $135 at duty free Sydney.

FWIW: Talisker Storm is currently available from Amazon.com.au for $90.00

Ended up getting Redbreast Lustau for $84. Not able to utilize the bday voucher online. So just purchased upon arrival airport and showed qr code.

My drink of choice is the Dalwhinnie 15yo. It used to cost about $98 on special at Dan's and others, but in the past 2 months the cost has risen to around $145, so when they are special usually about $105 I buy a couple at a time. I think it was about the time there was talk about tax on spirits on the rise, but I have some to keep me quiet.

That is a very good drop
