Aeroplan (Air Canada) is now selling points

Had a very interesting welcome from an Agent when I called up last week to add a stopover onto an Aeroplan Award ticket (was originally SIN - BNE in Singapore J, added on SGN - SIN + 5 day layover to the booking for 5,000 + taxes).

Upon finally getting through to an agent (after trying calling 5 times the day previous and dealing with the call randomly ending and the end of service hours) the agent proceeded to tell me to never ever make a booking or change online. If you call up they can do it cheaper for you and doing it online is causing the loss of jobs so please never make an award booking online....Thankfully the only reason I was calling up was because I couldn't do what I wanted to online.

Was an interesting one given I had spent a few good hours on hold trying to find a way to get onto the actual Aeroplan team to help me make the booking. The agent was incredibly helpful after that and even commented that it was a great use of points, but nevertheless it was a bit odd.

For those who do need to call up at all I found right on 9am AEST and on +1 800 361 5373 led to a wait time of only 3 minutes to get onto the agent (I might have just got super lucky on that one given all other reported wait times trying to get onto the Aeroplan team).

Noted in case I need to ring Aeroplan!

Wonder what they mean by they can make it cheaper over the phone? Wonder if there's a discount that gets applied for phone bookings?

No discount for phone bookings. I guess they’re referring to being able to construct routings you can’t get online, saving you points by getting you the through fare rather than sectors?

Yes, I think they were referring to the fact they could probably put things together or use stopovers or alike which someone may not necessarily know how to use to maximum advantage. Or perhaps maybe they have slightly more availability they could look at.

Immediately after making this comment they searched my booking and stated that it was really great value redemption (the return leg was a BNE - CNS - SIN (+6 day stopover) - PEN with Virgin J onto Singapore J) so perhaps they realised that I was aware of the use of stopovers?

Definitely the first time I've ever been told by an Airline to deliberately not use the online booking tool!

TK has released 2x J seats on pretty much every flight between SYD-IST (route launching 5 Dec 2024). It's 110,000 Aeroplan points + ~CAD131 each way. Add on a connecting flight to/from pretty much anywhere in Europe for no extra points.
I'd imagine SYD - KUL itself is also available at 45k+tax?
