Sounds like there was a significant infrastructure failure, which falls back on the provider. After all, we only use commercial data centres for one or two main reasons, and high on the list is avoiding such outages.
Kudos must go to @Admin. We're fortunate to also have a number of Moderators in IT, so that would have been handy if a sounding board was necessary. It's akin to a plane breaking down and waiting in the Lounge for the engineers to assess and fix - finally we're back in the air. The corollary is that Admin is now much better schooled in disaster management (not that he wanted to be).
