I am unaware of what this is.
The build up is a reference to the onslaught of the wet season. Uncomfortable humidity, sometimes violent storms and rumour has it, some people have the tendency to go troppo! (at least I'm assuming that's what tuapekastar was indicating).

Something for everyone who likes cruises you mean!!
I would rather do a weekend in a Bali jail than a cruise !!

My husband would have said the same thing until three years ago. He knows better now.

Without trying to make light of a very serious issue, we always referred to The Wet as "Suicide Season". The heat and the humidity are unbearable and the only thing that makes it worthwhile are the fantastic lightning & thunderstorms and sunsets.

My vote is for Darwin, but it needs to be earlier in the year when it's still dry and cooler. There is so much to see and do around Darwin. A visit during the Dry would give everyone a chance to enjoy the Mindil Beach markets and spectacular sunsets before they close end of October. There is also Kakadu which is better during the Dry. I was there mid October and the road to Jim Jim Falls had just closed, so I chartered a flight out to and over the falls and instead. The highway to Kakadu is very good &130 kmph for a lot of the way. (IMHO) hiring a car and staying for a couple of days at Crocodile Mercure is easy, plus more relaxing and cheaper than going on a tour. I had better stop there before this turns into a sales pitch for Darwin.

Darwin streets ahead.

I won't vote as the dates are variable and my calendar is almost full through to September already. Ozfest style events work a little better.

Another vote for Darwin, but at a better time of year. Like others have said, the build-up is the worst time to be in Darwin, and I think going then will give some newcomers an unfairly negative experience. The build-up is when the weather is 'building up' to a monsoon season, and is the worst of all worlds: not much rain, very hot and very humid. For the un-acclimatised this can be soul-sucking. It's thoroughly exhausting to do anything not air conditioned and you'll be sweating profusely and feeling hot and bothered the whole time. My favourite colloquialism for the effects is 'mango madness' (because people go a bit mad and it coincides with the mangoes ripening).

Darwin is a far more enjoyable place in the dry season, around mid-year. Much better weather and there's more activities and the opportunity to enjoy them like markets and outdoor activities.

"Most locals divide the year into three periods; "the dry" from around May to early September, "the build up" from the first signs of humidity in September to when the rains really kick in sometime in December, and bring "the wet season" which lasts untill April." - See more at: Darwin Weather and Climate

I agree. Perhaps someone could organise an inaugural AFF cruise and leave the annual AFF do to terrestrial endeavours?

But this isn't FT JohnK. It's worked for 10 years.

I have voted for DRW as it is somewhere I have wanted to visit for ages.
And dare I suggest it, I am happy to help out anyone who [-]is drafted[/-] volunteers to be the lead organiser. which means I am not the lead organiser.

Just put a vote in for DRW. Only ever passed through so would like to see a bit more of the place.
If DRW is selected I hope the date fits in with other plans.
