I will pay next week for both of us when I return to Australia...I left my banking dongle at home so can't transfer money. To help with numbers, the 2 of us are staying at Hilton and are arriving late for Fri dinner / drinks - 930pm...We will do the Kuranda train on Sat and Sat dinner but won't be going to Green Island on Sunday. We are around for informal dinner on Sunday, and lunch Monday. Our choices for Saturday dinner are: Entrée: salmon, kangaroo, Main: Prawns, lamb, Dessert; crepe, lemon tartlet
Thanks

Paid for Kuranda and Saturday dinner.
Food choice: Salmon, Lamb, Choc Fudge. Cheers. :)

Re: Schedule

Okay, as one whose Queensland forays extend no further North than BNE airport, I have to bring up one word in relation to Cairns and especially Green Island, and pose the following question(s) to CNS locals/frequent visitors. Stingers. It seems from a bit of reading they are far more likely to be close to the mainland, but also may float about out on the reef. And this weekend will be officially in stinger season.

Is there any realistic danger of being 'stung' when swimming/snorkelling at/near Green Island (I don't intend to go into the sea at Cairns)? Do I need to wear a 'stinger suit'? Will I return to MEL alive?

Thanks if anyone has some info/experience on this.

The times I've been out to Green Island, Fitzroy Island and the outer reef, I've never worried too much about stingers. Closer to shore, I would be more cautious. You can hire stinger suits from the island operators. I think you'd get away without needing one.

Re: Schedule

Cruise/dive operators are well aware of the stingers issues, and will advise accordingly on the day if needed.

Re: Schedule

I think the Green Island fast cat (the little one) has stinger suits for free. (I'm not entirely sure as we didn't need them). They also had prescription masks for free, which many operators charge up to $35 for. I'd hate to offer bad advice, but just at that time, I'd be thinking that unless there had been heavy rain in the days leading up to it, you won't need the lycra!

Re: Schedule

Can we go to Fitzroy Island instead?

Re: Schedule

Unfortunately I can't make it anymore, work has got in the way :(

I hope everyone has a fantastic time, the event looks great and I'm super disappointed to miss it.

Re: Schedule

There is always AFF #10 to look forward to ...
I've been to a number of AFF related events, but never an AFF official gathering (I think).

Knowing my luck, the year that all the planets align, will see an official AFF gathering at Heard Island!

I have just paid for the 2 of us :)

I just paid as well.
Salmon, Lamb, and the lemon thing please.

And austerity measures now see me in the Ibis rather than the Novotel. I'll drag myself over to the DT for the bus on Saturday.

I'm also intending to do the 08:30 - 14:30 GI trip, although I'm not sure if it's a bit tight to make the 17:10 flight. I have an international connection at BNE although not overly concern about getting the bp in CNS as the EK flight departs BNE at 2am-ish so I can sort it out after arriving in BNE.
