re: AFF Wine Lover Meet-Up [6 Jan 2016]

Given the likely weather in January, I will probably opt for something lighter in style. A knock your socks off big red might be a bit much in 30-40 degrees.

I like your optimism on the weather, Penegal! It was one of the reasons I went for the Pinot Noir, but also because I have yet to find a decent one for under $40, and thought it would be a good challenge to set where we would end up with a potential winner and new go-to Pinot Noir drink. But I appreciate it might be a bit too hard a challenge, so I like the other suggestions coming in on theme. We can come back to theme once we lock in the venue ...

re: AFF Wine Lover Meet-Up [6 Jan 2016]

I'm taking one bottle to share amongst 25 on the Clare Valley tour this Sunday

I'm really annoyed that I can't make this event

Have fun in the Valley, Buzzard.

I am sure this will be the start of many.

Maybe you (or another AFF) could be the point man for an Adelaide Wine Lovers Meet-Up. There are a good number of you down there, and some may even travel down and combine it with a trip up to the vineyards.

He has already organised a half dozen winery trips around SA regions for AFF in the past. Check out the "Meetings and Social Events" area.

Thanks Penegal, and good on you Buzzard for being so gracious with your time and energy for AFF. Looking forward to meeting you both as and when that happens ...

Dear Sydney AFF Wine Lovers and Beefarmer (and any other AFFs in Sydney on 7 January 2016)

I have found a spare 20 minutes to do some more homework on the Sydney AFF Wine Lovers January Meet-Up, and have narrowed down the options to the following two venues:

Option 1 - the Relaxed Budget Italian

Venue: Bar Reggio

Link: https://www.zomato.com/sydney/bar-reggio-darlinghurst

Why: It is consistently rated good for groups. It does cheap BYO. It has outside seating if the weather is good. It does an all you can eat Italian buffet for $29 a head with corkage at $1.50 per person (not sure if per bottle too, but it's cheap corkage anyway). It's in Darlinghurst, and a short walk to Museum Station or a 10 minute walk to Town Hall Station.

Option 2 - the Posh Harbour Dining Experience (almost private function)

Venue: Ripples (at Milsons Point)

Link: https://www.zomato.com/sydney/ripples-at-milsons-point-milsons-point

Why: It's the Harbour experience, which always makes for a special back drop and enriches the ocassion. It's fairly posh (modern Aussie food), but not exorbitantly priced for a Harbourside Sydney restaurant. It does $12 per bottle corkage. It's a short walk to Milsons Point train station or a quick ferry trip from the CBD. There are some great bars up the road in Kirribilli if the mood takes us. As a group booking they would want to host us between 2:30pm and 5pm outside their normal lunch dining time so they can better cater for us. And here is the view!!:

The rules for selection of venue: The majority of votes by those that respond before this Sunday (1 November) and intend to go will have the deciding vote.

Ps: I had to disregard Via Napoli in the end because it would require a taxi or bus ride from the CBD to get there, and there are too many people who would like to go that really need to be near a quick and easy exit home.

Just an update. I finally got hold of Bar Reggio after several days of trying. They are closed for two weeks over Christmas, and their first day open is Friday 8 January 2016. So if we choose this as the venue, then we'll need to shift to that Friday. Bar Reggio's BYO corkage fee is $2 per person, regardless of the quantity each person brings.

If we stick to the Thursday 7 January 2016, then by default we need to go with Ripples (or we revert back to Via Napoli and people will need a two stop travel strategy home).

Sorry for the muck around to those that have responded so far: Penegal, DrSammyLee and Alzoam.

Wozza, appreciate the effort you have gone to make this happen and happy to confirm all options are fine with me.

Hi Wozza,

I'm pretty good with all options and happy to fit in with whichever wine theme is decided (as long as it allows for me to have red!).

re: AFF Wine Lover Meet-Up [6 Jan 2016]

Appreciate the effort Wozza.

As stated up-thread, I am not fussed on venue. As they say, "Build it and they will come".

Wozza - apologies for the late reply.. have been in the Barossa on a "research" trip - also with some bias, I may have solved your no pinot under $40 problem here!
Re - venue & date, I can make either work at this stage, looking forward to a get together.

Awesome, Blockers. Glad you will be joining us. I am looking forward to meeting you.

And I like the look of that Pinot Noir - the 2010 in particular sounds right up my street. "Some bias" - I am intrigued, although you don't have to reveal your interests if that's not appropriate here.

An update will follow for the January meet-up after discovering our preferred choice is closed on that Thursday for New Year and Beefarmer is not around on the Friday.

re: AFF Wine Lover Meet-Up [6 Jan 2016]

Anybody going to The Penfolds Collection 2015 Member Tasting Event at the Cruise Bar (Sydney) tomorrow night?

I know a few of you are going with work colleagues and clients. I am currently going on my own. If you want to join me, then please let me know. I am looking forward to it.

Many thanks,

Wozza

Hi Wozza, looks like I'll be there but I won't know until the last minute whether my +1 will be able to make it. I'd be happy to catch up for a drink beforehand as well if you're looking for something to kill time after work before it starts :)

Thanks Katy. I will message you offline to make arrangements. Hopefully hubby does get to go too. It's not every night you get to try some iconic wines from one of Australia's best known producers. See you tomorrow ...

I'll be at work during the day but will put my hand up (+ 1) if it's dinner. Also, you do mean 2016, don't you Wozza?
