Friends, countrymen (and women), wine snobs and wine slobs.

It's that time of year again. We are organising another New Year Sydney meetup, a year on from our inaugural meeting. The proposed date is Friday January 6, the location to be decided.

There will be a theme, and you get to help us choose. We have two current theme suggestions:

  1. Riesling and Shiraz
  2. Western Australian wines

We are hoping that having a mix of styles will help break up the monotony of tasting too many similar wines in succession. This year, we are trying to de-emphasise the competitive nature of previous meetups, so you will not be required to bring two bottles of your selected wine, with the winners taking the spoils. However, to try and encourage a bit of diversity there will be a prize for the best white wine of the night and the best red wine of the night.

Nevertheless in the interests of further developing the sharing nature of the community, we will be asking participants to bring a second bottle of their choosing, to go into a blind swap. We do ask people to be thoughtful and generous of spirit. As a guideline we would suggest a minimum RRP of $30 for swap wines.

After some discussion, we feel that the May meetup was probably a little on the large side, with too many wines to do them all justice, and too much pressure on the person managing the pours. We are therefore suggesting that we limit the numbers to 12 participants, which we think is at the upper end of what is manageable. If we have interest from more than 12 people, we will consider splitting the group up into two separate events.

Please let me know if you are interested in attending (tentative or confirmed), and if you prefer theme option 1 or 2. We will go with whatever the majority decide.

All suggestions gratefully received, feel free to PM me if you'd prefer not to post publicly.

Cheers,
DB

I'm interested in attending, but with prior commitments I am unfortunately a sad bronze :(

I am sure it will be another good night

edit; this thread should really be in "Meetings and social events"

Sign me up DB.

I agree with the sentiments. The May event was a fantastic night, but it was a little too large, so I felt my palate was "nuked" by all the tannins as the night went on. Also, poor Wozza had his work cut out for him. 10-12 sounds like a good number.

I am not fussed by the format, just tell me what to do...

Count me in as well!

I'd be happy with either theme - perhaps a white wine will finally win me over?

At this stage, i will be in Sydney then so put me down as interested but please don't hold a place for me for now.

I would love to come. But I have a very, very short leash at the moment. So I won't know until the week it's on. Hopefully I can make it.

In terms of the theme, the WA one would be my preference. But as everybody has said, I'd be happy with either.

Katy and I struggled to get a venue last year that was in the CBD and a BYO. If you want, please feel free to PM me and Katy and we'll let you know what was available last year.

Thanks for organising, DB.

Wozza, does your short leash still allow you out for business dinners? You’re in mergers and acquisitions right? So you see, I have this Riesling that I have acquired that needs to be merged with some Shiraz. Can you broker that deal for me? The details are a little complex, so I think we’d need to discuss it over dinner, are you free on Jan 6th.

I’m happy to look after your phone for the night. I’ll make sure it finds its way back to you safely afterwards. And we can institute a strict no after-party party policy, which should get you home before the witching hour.

Excellent, thanks everybody. Just to confirm the numbers as they currently stand. So far we have six confirmed and four tentative. So we are already close to a full house if all our tentatives firm up.

Confirmed

- Delectable Blue
- Mrs DB (+1)
- Penegal
- Katy
- Alzoam
- Viridianne

Tentative

- Kpc
- AnanymousCoward
- CJEMNMAC
- Wozza

Please let me know if anybody else is interested in attending, or has a +1 to add to the list.

So far we have only one vote for a theme, and that is for Western Australian wines, so currently that is our front-runner. I’d like to finalise the theme this week to give people a chance to purchase wines if necessary. So if you have strong feelings about the theme please let me know this week. Otherwise, WA wines is it.

I'm happy with either theme - I don't think I have any Riesling, Shiraz, or any WA wines in my collection. Better get buying!

Unfortunately I have to return to work on 3rd January so am unable to fly up for this event.
If I was to attend, WA wines would be my pick. Some nice stuff comes out of WA.

Forget Christmas, there’s only two weeks to go to our meetup - that’s only 14 sleeps!

It looks like the consensus is for the WA theme, so consider that locked in. Feel free to start your shopping AC. :)

I am negotiating a booking with Sky Phoenix, which is where we met last new year. They can provide a private room like we had last year, but there is a minimum charge for the room, which comes to $630. So the viability of this may depend on the final numbers. The banquet meal is $42 a head plus $10 a bottle corkage. So the base cost will be $52 a head for a room for twelve, but could rise to $79 a head if we only have eight attendees and take a room. However, if the number of attendees is small we can probably cope at a regular table without incurring the additional room cost. The restaurant have asked us to confirm if we need the private room by Jan 3, so if you are still tentative, please let me know by then if you will be able to join us.

Once you have decided on your tasting contribution, please PM me with the details so I can ensure that we won’t have any double-ups, and can arrange a run-sheet for the night.

Looking forward to seeing you all in January.

Cheers,
DB

Thanks DB. I found out Ripples at Milsons Point do BYO as well. Accessible by train (Milsons point). Again if we're lacking numbers I'll ask +2 if they're still interested. Though we require a vego menu should we go Sky Phoenix banquet route.

You've reminded DB of the funny quirk we experienced with the bill last year. When they came to add up the corkage cost, they only charged us for the wines with corks they opened! We weren't charged for the 10 screw cap bottles we opened ourselves that night! I think we all came away paying $45 a head as a result! I'm sure they won't do the same again!

The private room worked out well in the end. And the food was pretty decent. I don't think it will be an issue if you are out on the main floor. It's not a busy time of year for them.

Thanks for organising. I'll let you know if I am a definite.
