AFR Article - Joe Aston goes BAM!

From the article -:

"Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphatically denied seeking flight upgrades from former Qantas boss Alan Joyce, after days of pressure over claims he asked for better plane seats.

Albanese denied he texted or emailed Joyce about flight upgrades, directly shared any flight or travel plans with the former airline chief executive, or did so via other figures at Qantas."

Fordham: Did you ever text Alan Joyce about flight upgrades?
Albanese: No.
Fordham: Did you ever email Alan Joyce about flight upgrades?
Albanese: No.
Fordham: Did you ever share with Alan Joyce any flights or travel plans without specifically asking for an upgrade?
Albanese: No.
Fordham: Was there someone else at Qantas you were seeking upgrades from or sharing your travel plans with?
Albanese: No.

So the PM is (unsurprisingly) doubling down on his position.

Agree, there are current MPs who have done much worse to QF who still hold membership.
That's also been reported and "much worse" would be a rather large stretch, so feel free to add any other examples. It is true of course for High Court judges though, but they tend not to be a target for lobbyists unsurprisingly.

This is a Labor MPs description of the Labor Party not "going soft" on Qantas:

"I encourage people to look at Anthony Albanese's record as the transport minister, leader of the opposition and prime minister when it comes to Qantas, where he hasn't played favourites," Senator Watt said.

"When he was the transport minister more than a decade ago, when Qantas grounded their fleet and went after unions, Anthony Albanese took Qantas on about that.

"In opposition, when Qantas illegally sacked their workforce despite receiving nearly a billion dollars in JobKeeper, Anthony Albanese and Labor took Qantas on about that … we've brought in Same Job, Same Pay laws, which have already helped Qantas labour hire workers get pay rises of more than $30,000 in some cases.
"

There's not of meat on that bone, particularly in the context of the Qatar decision.

Bridget McKenzie.

Bridget McKenzie.

Sure, if you consider 'asking questions QF would rather not answer', to be "much worse". She hasn't won a single battle against Qantas nor affected its operations. QF don't have a good reason to revoke her CL. Might be interesting if there's a change of gov at the next election though.

You don’t think her 1+ year public campaign against Qantas, including calling a senate inquiry, calling for the divestiture of Jetstar and advocating for Qatar hasn’t been significantly damaging? Even if just measured by PR?

Compared to Clive Palmer not voting with the government (noting the opposition didn’t either) it seems much worse to me.

The political optics suggest that cancelling BM's CL membership would be a PR disaster as it would make it plain to the everyone that CL membership is subject to the member's political views and QF would use the CL membership as a stick if a member criticises the airline.

I agree but the insinuation was that’s how QF deals with problem makers. We never heard the other side of Clive Palmers incident.

As far as its public knowledge CL is given to every MP regardless of party. Jackie Lambie had a temporary ban for poor behaviour. Maybe Clive did something similar?

JA could only dream of this much free advertising for the book
As Oscar Wilde opined ‘the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about’

His book was launched in Sydney the other night. There was an very strong lineup of luminaries from all sorts of walks of life. I hope he got a good deal on the book from his publisher. I reckon it would be flying off the shelves right now.

But as I said the thing about the former transport minister is only a couple of paragraphs towards the back half of the book. He does take shots at many politicians certainly including the ones on the other side of the political divide.

I think the person happiest about all this would be Alan Joyce

And can be taken away very easily if the pollies or anyone else displeases the CEO or Chair.

Which, frankly, is exactly as it should be (assuming CL is going to be provided to political figures). To do otherwise would be a PR cluster#$%& on Qantas' behalf.
Yes, even the most junior pollie is worthy of cultivsting. You never know when in future years they might end up as, for instance, the transport minister. 😊

I am not sure they do.

For something that could be an innocent mistake, the PM has spent considerable time in denial, including some carefully crafted pressers.

I haven't read the book; however, it's the second one I thought I would buy but have been unable.
I agree that the response and rebuttal has been very badly handled.

By doing this, yes:

Bridget McKenzie hasn’t lost hers so I’d say every other MP is safe as long as they don’t go full Lambie at the staff.

Or just simply that AJ didn't like CP blocking the privatisation legislation....

Or because he ate more than his fair share of prawns?

Again, never heard the other side of the story and considering what other MPs have done and still retained membership, I’m not convinced.

I certainly don’t blame them for banning Jacqui Lambie. A loud, foul-mouthed grub. The SMH story is 0aywalled. Can you give us a few snippets?

And, frankly, Clive Palmer also.

I don’t know the history of Bridget McKenzie attacking Qantas but if it’s mainly the recent effort in the senate etc Qantas wouldn’t dare taking out anything on her under the environment at the time. But the Lambie and Palmer episodes show the politicians that displease Qantas can be evicted from the House.

Google “Nationals” and “John Sharp”. Add “Rex” for good measure.

As they should for bad behaviour, like anyone else. It would be corrupt to excuse it actually.
