Air India Delays/Cancellations

Wednesday 22 June 2022 saw AI308, the 1250 hours early afternoon DEL - MEL (B788 VT-ANY0 take off at 1323, only marginally late, but arrival in MEL on Thursday 23 morning was 0610 hours, 35 minutes behind the timetable. AI309 back is much more delayed, with this 0845 hours flight airborne at 1023. Consequently, estimated at gate arrival in DEL is 1805 hours, 70 minutes late.

On Saturday 23 July, AI301 is worse than the previous posting, with departure not expected until 1400 hours this afternoon, so 255 minutes late.

Sunday 24 July has AI301, the morning 0945 hours SYD - DEL delayed to an expected 1610 in its pushback, 385 minutes late. This is due to B788 VT-ANT on yesterday afternoon's AI302, the 1325 hours early afternoon not taking off until 2125 mid evening, with arrival in SYD estimated as 1328 (in a few minutes' time), which will be 388 late.

On Tuesday 26 July, AI302 (B788 VT-ANA, the 1355 hours DEL - SYD) was not in the sky until 1845 hours in the early evening. Inevitably, on Wednesday 27, arrival should be at about 1106 hours late morning, 246 minutes behind schedule. This will delay AI301, the 0945 hours ex SYD to a predicted 1255, 190 minutes tardy.

AI309, the 0845 hours MEL - DEL on Wednesday is predicted to depart 170 minutes late at 1135 hours.

One advantage of using AI (compared to QF) on MEL - DEL is that in that direction, QFi makes an intermediate stop in ADL: AI does not. AI is unpunctual on its Oz routes too often.

However many still prefer (despite the indirect route) to use SQ to SIN and then connect to the good range of destinations it offers in India. That's what I did pre-COVID.

B788 VT-NAC operated AI308 on Saturday 30 July 2022, the 1315 hours DEL down to MEL in the sky at 1611, so Sunday 31 arrival was at 0837, 157 minutes tardy. AI309 back had yet to take off by 1028 hours.

Monday 8 August 2022 saw AI308 (B788 VT-ANY, the 1315 hours DEL: overnight to MEL) taking off at 1326, which was about 5-10 minutes early. On Tuesday 9, MEL arrival was 0526 hours, 34 early, but the return 0845 hours AI309 did not take off until 0938. Expected arrival in the Indian capital becomes 1740, 45 behind.

Today (Sunday 4) AI301 was altered to a 1530 hours departure with VT-NAC in the sky at 1528 for a suggested 2332 hours DEL arrival.

B788 VH-AND on AI302, the 1400 hours Sunday 5 March afternoon DEL-SYD took off at 1454 hours. Gate arrival on Monday 5 is suggested as 0827 hours, 32 behind schedule.

B788 VT-ANQ on AI308, the 1330 hours early afternoon Wednesday 9 August DEL-MEL did not take off until 1853 hours. Thursday 10 arrival at gate became 1052 hours, 262 minutes late. The 0800 hours AI309 back will be unable to push back until at least 1230, so will be badly late arriving in the Indian capital.

B788 VT-ANC on AI302, the Monday 14 August 2023 scheduled mid afternoon 1420 hours DEL-SYD was airborne at 1548 hours. Gate arrival on Tuesday 15 is shortly at 0806 hours, 56 minutes tardy.

Saturday 31 August 2024 has seen AI309, the scheduled 0800 hours MEL up to DEL (B788 VT-ANP) in the sky at 0901 hours with a 35 minute delayed arrival likely at 1640 this afternoon Indian time.

Very ANNOYING!! Family member was flying a good €2300 business class fare from Europe to Australia on AI. Left CDG 4 hours late, left DEL 4 hours late.

But… arrived and at the gate, door open, 2hrs55 late!

So just missed out on compensation by 5 mins.

As i said, very annoying :D :D

Wouldn't your relative only be entitled to compensation if the flight arrived DEL three hours or more late at the gate?

Isn't the DEL-Australia flight irrelevant for EU261 purposes?

No, it’s arrival at your final destination as shown on the ticket.

EU261 extends to connections, even on non EU carriers. So the DEL-SYD flight is the one that’s relevant.

Same also applies for pax on say Air France to Singapore, connecting to Singapore airlines to AU. SQ is on the hook for a late arrival!

AI301, the Sunday 1 September 2024 0945 hours midmorning SYD-DEL was airborne at 1047 hours with B788 VT-ANY. Arrival should be half an hour behind at 1835 hours local time.

Tuesday 10 September 2024's AI308, the afternoon scheduled 1555 hours DEL-MEL was not in the sky until 1819. B788 VT-ANE should arrive at about 1000 hours, 100 minutes late, delaying the returning AI309.

Wednesday 11 September's AI309, the 1000 morning MEL-DEL was in the sky at 1240 hours so arrival at gate for B788 VT-ANE should be 2007 hours, 122 minutes tardy.

Meanwhile, AI310 (VT-ANK, B788) as AI310 from MUM to MEL (the 0135 hours that wasn't pointing skywards until 0639) is arriving at gate at 2216 hours, 286 minutes late.

B788 VT-ANU on the 0135 hours Sunday 15 AI310 from BOM down to MEL was airborne at 0242. Gate arrival looks to be an hour late at 1830 in the early evening.

Continuing from the previous post, on Monday 16 September, AI311, the 1900 hours scheduled Sunday 15 MEL-BOM took off (on Monday) at 1216 hours. Arrival tonight should be at 1929 instead of the scheduled 0230 hours, so 1019 minutes late. B788 VT-ANU remains the aircraft.
