If it was a brick, would it had made a difference? No, its still assault. No one has the right to hit me (AJ) with anything because they are displeased with me.
A very Australian way of expressing your displeasure with a 'tall poppy'....beyond sending a cleaning bill I dont see any further action being taken against the chap.
I disagree. It was designed to humiliate him and in a very public manner. Assault is not all about physical damage.Yes it's technically assault but not very serious in the scheme of things. Not something to be applauded or celebrated (although there are some public figures where we would be justified IMHO), but still, not really that serious. Very much slap-on-the-wrist territory for the cops / court.
Plus - as a protest it really isn't that effective. No idea what his cause / message is. Simply unfurling a banner with clear wording never crossed his mind? Poor effort all round.
Just reported - apparently he doesn't seem to like AJ supporting same sex marriage.

To say he picked the least likely item to cause injury implies injury nonetheless can be a result.

Am wondering if some of those previously playing the "law and order" card will now come out and support him.Just reported - apparently he doesn't seem to like AJ supporting same sex marriage.

How can he not be aware that hitting someone with anything in the face is not a criminal offence.

Of course it was designed to humiliate him, but in the scheme of things I see day-in day-out in and around the justice system it's extremely small fry in terms of severity.
It's similar to how that whilst trespass alone is certainly a criminal offence, often there'll be little consequence unless you cause some measurable damage or loss.
If he even ends up in court it'll be a sub $1k fine, 1 year good behaviour bond, apology letter to AJ, pay the cost of dry-cleaning if it was needed, and no conviction recorded. If he hadn't (allegedly) lied to the cops it'd never end up that far.
If I were the Magistrate I'd make him pay his fine to a pro-marriage equality organisation. I've seen that happen (guy who defaced a LGBTQ organisation's signage with homophobic slurs had to pay his fine to them, as well as the cost of repairs) and in this case it'd certainly be justice served.
Mr Joyce indicated he would push for charges against ex-farmer Tony Overheu, 67, who stormed the stage at a Perth business event on Tuesday to lodge a $25.95 lemon meringue pie in the chief executive's face.
Mr Overheu told radio station 6PR he objected to Qantas' support for marriage equality, which he labelled "corporate bullying aimed at social engineering".

What a wanker. As others have said though, our justice system will let everyone down. This <redacted> will walk away with a bag of boiled lollies and a cabcharge to get home, no conviction and will probably contest the charge, costing the prosecution thousands in costs to prepare a full brief. What a <redacted>
