I was fortunate enough to get the CX mistake fare on new year's day and will be crediting my F HKG-JFK-HKG to AS. With the extraordinarily generous 350% bonus on F for Mileage Plan I'll net 56k-odd redeemable miles. Mileage Plan Gold requires 40k miles. I assume, though, that's bum-in-seat miles so my 56k won't even get me close, is that correct?

TPG says you'll earn MVP Gold as it's an 'or' not an 'and' in their eligibility requirements.

Just bought 50,000 Alaska miles with the 40% bonus promotion from last weekend.

Then used this guide to get 2 weeks in Japan in January 2020 for 25,000 points each (considered a one-way flight with a stopover in Tokyo)
Guide: Buying Alaska Airlines Miles

SIN-NRT-KUL

All up cost about AUD $1,640 for the miles and taxes for 2 pax. Very happy!

Would love some suggestions for using points for our positioning flight SYD-SIN and then returning home KUL-SYD?

Through buying miles, or do you already have some other FF miles in the bank?

We have QFF miles available, but open to buying too as we're saving QF miles for the elusive QF OW classic award with hubbie in 2021.

Buying miles may prove a little more difficult then having QFF up your sleeve. You could buy some LifeMiles or UA Mileage to use on *A, but may be tough getting rewards from Oz to SIN through those programs, probably same as return. If there's QF/MH awards available when you need then you could buy some AA miles.

Otherwise, EK through QFF is probably your friend if all else fails as there seems to be generally better premium award availability from MEL/BNE-SIN on those EK flights.

Thanks @rock86! That's really helpful.

I was thinking it probably will be a QF points booking so will have a look into EK with QFF too from MEL/BNE.

Finding J flights using AS miles in or out of OZ - might as well try lotto. Been using AS miles for years but not now due to stingy J seat availability. Only way is to commence long haul is ASIA where seats can be plentiful and along with mini fees too.

You were right. I managed to get a SYD-MEL-SIN this morning on EK to get to SIN for the departure. 120,000 QF points for 2pax + about $700 in taxes.

I was thinking next Lifemiles promo I could get a BKK-SYD. Then I just need to buy an economy flight KUL -BKK and have a couple of nights before coming home.

Options KUL-SYD are pretty limited on QF and have long stopovers in PER.

That is a good idea, there does always seem to be decent availability through LifeMiles for BKK-SYD on TG - not sure whether it has tightened up at all though since TG announced a scale back of flights late last year?

I’m connecting to one of the JL 25k business class awards ex SIN. I just booked Jetstar business class for $629 which seemed the cheapest and fastest option for a day time flight. (Coming back i’m exBKK so used Lifemiles for TG)

Scoot also has ‘scootbiz’ fares for around $500 to SIN, and Air Asia in the $800 region to KUL.

Cool - that's also a good option if I didn't get an award booking.

I'm super keen to try TG J or F, so will head to BKK like you too and pounce on the next LM promo.

Despite the bonus points being great value, after "testing "seat availability to to HKG and LAX I think this FF progarm for J class is about as useful as an ashtray on a motor bike. How does 28 hours or 35 hours to LAX sound ? It's as useful (less) as the AA FF program
