All International Arrivals into Australia to self isolate for 14 days

Is it naughty of me that I had a bit of a chuckle? (PS, which is of course withdrawn if the Mum is unwell but somehow I'm not buying that)

DYKWIA at its finest.

Free room and board at taxpayer expense in a 4* hotel rated 9.4/100 on Booking.com with a rainshower, airconditioning microwave and an expresso coffee maker in every room all for someone who it seems ignored "not advised to travel guidelines"

There was a claim in the article that the general response to the tweet was sympathetic which I immediately doubted and decided to do some investigation.

I can confirm from reading the replies that the general sentiment towards the tweet is absolutely not one of sympathy and generally follows exactly what I would expect the egalitarian Australian response to such a complaint would be...

Wow, government funded 2 week stay in some of the best hotels in the country. Even if not the best, it's not a hovel. People complaining left, right and centre it seems on social media and being interviewed yesterday by opportunistic media.

Should have come home when you were first told to. If you couldn't, bad luck.

Be thankful you're not spending 2 weeks in a horse stable.

......or out in the open on a Victorian beach with no room service during the bushfires

Her insta followers are more likely to be positive as they are pretty much the mindless "influenced".

I've just caught up with this thread and read from start to finish - yep I'm looking for things to do! However, my point is how quickly things have changed over the past 2 weeks since the thread was started. No wonder people are finding things surreal and hard to keep up.

Was interesting to hear the policeman in charge of the quarantine operation comment that on arrival the expected passenger numbers were down 25% on what they were told to expect. You only have to wonder if those who changed their minds about boarding, once they learned about the new rules for hotel quarantine, would ever have had any intention to self isolate under the previous rules.

We would not have travelled had we been required to stay in hotel (one x 2 weeks of being inside when we eventually return home to Singapore, is enough. 2x2 weeks would be quite painful). That would not reflect any intent to ignore self isolation rules, merely a weighing up of the circumstances. As it happened we made it back in time.

But you are not traveling at this time and I would anticipate most members of AFF would abide by the regulations.
My daughter will finish self-isolating in Netherlands tomorrow. She has done the right thing to her disadvantage as now she cannot leave.

Perhaps Lara W would prefer The Island option for her mother?

While we are all concerned for our relatives, making a song and dance about her mother not being accommodated in a 5-star hotel is probably a bit rich. Not that I’ve ever heard of her, but sounds a little bit self-entitled.

Real first world problem for Lara whose concept of reality has always been at a distance to the rest of us.

I am now looking for someone in Netherlands who'd like an interesting flat mate for a time as my daughter needs to move on from her current AMS digs.

Why is her mother wearing a face mask in her hotel room, in the selfie? Also, if there is a medical issue, then seek medical advice? Is this actually fake news?

Wonder how many Australians travelled overseas when they were instructed not to? The Australian on 02 April :

“About 16,000 Australians flew out of the country in the fortnight after Scott Morrison told everyone not to go overseas, triggering calls for defiant international travellers to foot the bill for their forced quarantine when they return home.

The Australian can reveal the 16,000 citizens went overseas by plane between March 19 and 30 even though the Prime Minister gave a very clear instruction to “not travel abroad” on March 18.

In addition, 3800 Australians flew out from March 25-30 after an official ban on all overseas travel came into force on March 24.

The significant outbound travel numbers, confirmed by the Department of Home Affairs, emerged as West Australian Premier Mark McGowan considered making passengers who ignored travel advice and went on holiday pay for the hotel accommodation they must quarantine in for two weeks on their return.

He hit out at “irresponsible” West Australians who raced off to Bali, Thailand and the UK in the past fortnight.“
