ALL QF's 330's to get lay flat Business seating - Including Domestic

So both MEL and BNE are getting far more love than Sydney.

If I had to hazard a guess, it's probably because out of SYD the J sales are doing better which means using the reconfigured planes would result in 2 less J seats. One of the flights from SYD-SIN is in fact operated with an A332 with 6 more J seats (36J 199Y).

Eventually they'd all be in the same 28J 269Y configuration though so not sure how that's going to pan out.

From what I've now read on another thread, would not surprise me if Qantas will just over sell and then bump 2 unlucky J pax down to Y for minimal compensation.

QF35 yesterday was a new config all the way up to about 4 hours before departure (I was checking EF every 30 minutes!) :( Nothing is final, folks... save any excitement for when you're physically walking down the aisle of a refurbed aircraft.

Always the risk with only a very small refurbed fleet

Today's QF35 is QPB.
Looks like yesterday they did a swap with QF29 to HKG

High quality fittings in Business Class on the refurb 332s

I know why this happened. I was on QF35 today and the USB port grabs onto the plug very firmly. It would be possible to pull out the socket from its mount, as we see here.

If you look at a USB plug, there are two little holes in the top. The socket gets stuck on those for some reason.

I ended up using a couple of tooth picks to get my cable out.

The CSM noted the problem down.

Booked on QF773 next week, it shows JQ config. QF481 currently shows new config. If I change I will probably end up disappointed (again) with last minute swap and late arrival but still can't resist ;)

I've been treating myself to some coast-to-coast domestic J upgrades lately, as I had to book some flexible tickets a couple of months ago and the 10K point spend seemed like a good deal. I think the last five flights between BNE and PER and back I've had have been in Business. I'm back to Y again now, unfortunately, although I do have two more confirmed upgrades coming up in the next couple of months. I've managed to get a Skybed once, fancy new J twice, and coughpy PE seating twice. I feel pretty lucky as I considered the Skybed a win, so that's 60% 'real' J, which seems far better than the current fleet upgrade status would suggest my chances would have been. Here's hoping at least one of my final two upgrades -- if not both -- are 'real' J as well! (Aside: I would have actually had an excellent 80% win rate but the PER lounge staff were very nice to me and let me move to an earlier flight on one day when I got to PER earlier than usual: I was 'downgraded' from fancy J to PE J due to the aircraft being different, but I got home ~12 hours earlier, which mrspooky was very happy about.)

Anyway, my take on the new J is as follows:
- It looks very nice and fancy.
- The 'suite' style, with increased privacy, is fantastic. Unless you have very noisy neighbours (like I had on my last flight -- friends who hadn't seen each other in a while, apparently), it really does feel as though you're flying in your own private room.
- Access to suite components is good and well laid out. There are two lights (a spot and 'mood' lighting) accessible at seat level as well as the standard overhead lights, and with the cabin lights out I found this sufficient for anything I needed to do, and also with very little light interference from my neighbours. One of my two new seats did have a broken spot light that wouldn't turn off.
- The seat itself is comfortable to sit in, but I found it a bit hard to sleep on. I'm tall (over 6'3") and I could lie down comfortably, roll on my side, etc. I chose inside aisle seats for both of my flights, one on each side. I found the one with the console between me and the aisle much better than the one open to the aisle. I felt more cosy and private -- less exposed to things going on around me, and much easier to sleep. But both were nice. The recline for take off seemed like an unnecessary gimmick; I didn't find it any more comfortable than upright seating. - Edit: the 'massage' on the seat also seemed like a bit of a gimmick, but seems to be about the same as on the Skybed. I found it a bit too hard for my liking.
- There's plenty of room for eating, and doing other things while eating and waiting to be served, which I find a very big benefit. There's enough room on the console to move everything off your tray table during the meal service if you need to get up to go to lavatories or anything like that.
- The screen is fantastic. It's large, easily angled to be watchable regardless of seating position, and very clear. The provided J headphones are good, with the plug being over your shoulder so you don't bump it or have it getting in the way while eating. I found the actual entertainment on offer to be boring, as anything I wanted to watch I had already seen. But that's pretty common for people that fly more than once in a month, I think, so I'm used to it. It would be nice if there was an expanded offering.
- Edit: the USB ports are located with easy access next to the headphone socket in the console area, with flat space and upright 'magazine rack' space large enough to hold a small laptop or tablet. I watched my tablet for most of one flight and then left it charging in the magazine rack area for the rest of flight, completely out of the way.

Overall I think Qantas has done a very good job. The longest flight I've had in the new J class was only about 6 hours (BNE -> PER with an hour's delay on the tarmac at BNE), but I would be very happy to be in the new Business Class on a much longer flight.

(as well as on FB HFC and YSSY) that VH-QPE back from paintshop today operating QF82

Appears that the 7.5 year old VH-EBH, which had Rockwell Collins IFE has been returned to lessor CIT.
Certainly a short life in the QF fleet compared to most aircraft.

I had my second trip on a refurb Bird in J yesterday and here is a bit of a mini review - certainly some hits and misses:

Hits:
I like the layout, the window seats are better than the aisle versions 2A and 4A are great. as the armrest folds down you basically get all the way up to the window as your lay down space.
The power and USB etc are very handily close, no more putting your back out trying to find the right orientation of the plug.
Plenty of Leg room when in recline position.
Lap and sash seat belt is a winner for safety.
The half recline spot for take off and landing was great on the shorter Asia flights, like QF36 SIN/MEL overnight and only 7 hours long.

Misses:
The seat is too hard, luckily the mattress makes it ok for sleeping.
bassinet positions, this one Qantas have really stuffed up, the bulkhead bassinet positions on the sides are WAY too small, basically a baby has to be a 6week prem newborn to fit in. I witness first hand a family with a 12 month olds dismay as the baby didn't fit in the bassinet, i have no idea what QF were thinking........ This is a serious design flaw.
The foot well when you sleep. I only have a size 10 foot, but your feet are lucky to fit into the space provided! its seriously way too small, anyone with a size 11 or above you are out of luck, prepare to have your feet shoehorned in there.
The IFE system; firstly the USB power doesnt give enough charge for any iDevice. (so whats the point in it) Its also recognized as a computer by iDevices (in terms of trusting it or not trusting it) - Do you want a QF A330 reading the contents of your mobile? Secondly the Camera and microphone on the screen in front of you, again do you want a QF A330 looking at you? all it needs was a simple coverswitch to cover over the camera, like most laptops do.
No ability for a couple to sit toegther, the middle seats needed a easy way to have the divider come down. - this is a crazily silly mistake to make.

Other:
The whole sleeper service on these flights, the lights were off for a total of 2 hours. and we landed at 5am in the morning, in reality the J cabin with its excellent in seat lighting should have been lights all off from take off to touch down. Why this is not QF policy is beyond me.
The crew; of late I have noticed a real professional polish, the excellent CSM - David really knew his stuff (its a trend Ive seen a lot of late) and understood what it means to serve a premium cabin well.
Food some interesting Menu choices and real variety, i had the bilgogi beef - it was surprisingly good and tasty for a light meal b4 dinner.

IMG_2671.jpgIMG_2668.jpg

In Summary, they are a huge improvement in the Mk I Skybeds they replace, however I think they stuffed a few things up, the bassinets, the no couples seating and the sub shoebox foot well really detract. For a single traveler give me the K side of a CX herringbone any day of the week.

Correct me if I am reading this wrong, but to me it does seem to come across as a touch of paranoia here.

I would assume the IFE features you note (trust/do not trust and the camera and microphone) are a feature of the system (playing your device through the screen, seat to seat chat) instead of QF spying on you.

Can you confirm if you are able to stream your device content through the IFE screen or not?

I didn't try to stream my own content, and I'm not really paranoid, nor was I at any stage worried, so treat it as a minor issue.

but if you are going to have a camera and microphone in the TV screen pointing at you, then you should have a off function that is totally under your control right?

Can you confirm if you are able to stream your device content through the IFE screen or not?

I have not been able to stream content from my Android (Kitkat) tablet through the USB socket to the IFE screen. My tablet didn't even recognise that it had been plugged in to any sort of computer device; it just treated it like substandard USB power, occasionally charging, but more often not.

In contrast, when I plugged the same tablet into the USB socket to the right of an IFE screen in a non-refurbished A330 a few weeks ago, both the tablet and the IFE system did recognise that a device that potentially supported streaming had been connected. However, I still couldn't get the streaming actually happening.

Has anyone else managed this?

I'm hoping for new J on 06/08 for QF5 and on 16/08 for QF52.

Come on lucky stars :)

Approx how many A330s have Skybed Mk1s vs the recliners (like premium economy)?

-330s
1 in shop
3 new config
6 SkyBed Is

-320s
1 in shop
3 new config
3 SkyBed Is (excluding EBH)
9 Recliner
3 Still with JQ with recliner
1/2 expected to leave fleet

The new A330 configuration has made its first appearance on todays CGK runs (QF41/QF42) with VH-QPA operating these sectors and funnily enough is operating out of Terminal 2E (Garuda's own terminal for international flights) instead of Terminal 2D for some reason.

The only Asian destination which hasn't seen a refurbished bird is BKK (QF23/QF24).

Pretty much every airline bassinet will only fit up to about a 6 month old baby, at most a VERY tiny 10 month old

Not sure why the parents thought a 12 month old would fit

Children and Infants | Qantas

As bassinets are limited, please ensure that you request this at the time of booking. Bassinets on Qantas flights are approximately 71cm long, 31cm wide, 26cm deep, and have a weight limitation of 11 kg. If your infant is too large for the bassinet and is travelling on the parents ticket then they must be nursed.
