amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

I'm a little apprehensive about calling up about it in case they switch my Explorer back to Gateway. They'd told me would need to create a separate login for Explorer as have all cards under the same login but I'm reluctant to change anything in case something breaks.
Interested to hear how you go with it.

Thats why Ill probably leave it and just call when I need to use my travel credit unless other people in the same situation have had this fixed without issue.

Thinking of getting the Edge card ( then moving my Explore card from Gateway), but spend a lot on insurance. I see in the online Edge offer ( home page), that points are set to 0.5 points/ $1.00 spend for "insurances" under Ascent but cannot find any reference to Insurances in teh MR Edge T&CCan others advise if they are getting points at the standard rate for Edge rather than the reduced rate on non Amex insurances?

They changed mine so I could see both and use individually as I needed when I rang them

in this case use your explorer once linked so you will earn a flat 2pt/$1 but they will bank to your ascent program

EDIT: once linked, keep the edge for supermarkets only, explorer for everything else, its what i do

Both travel credits with their respective expiry dates are now showing. Fantastic.

The only thing that would be awesome is if you could you both travel credits together but alas you cannot-
[h=3]These Travel Credits are available to redeem. You may redeem one Travel Credit per booking.[/h]

hmm amex getting smart
wife has rung twice now to merge edge and explorer and rejected both times.
2nd guy even explained why saying she would be getting 2 ascent points per dollar...lol

Remain polite....and call back a week later...and a week later again if necessary. Persistence (and politeness) will pay off eventually :)

It took me 5 tries before someone did it for me (and move the bonus points too). From memory it was mentioned here to call around 6am AEST (I think?) which was when I called the final time and they did it for me. Did this back in Feb though so not sure if it's changed since.

can anyone give me some pointers, I managed to convince a family member to sign up, and in return I would get 50k points of their bonus,

theyve now turned around and said they have no use for them, so they want to ive me all their points

so thats 100k points plus 3k for the minimum spend,

wahts the best way to get the points to me given that we will cancel as soon as we can, I believe the family member transfer is max 50k per year?

Do the 50k Amex transfer then maybe look for a ff program that allows family transfers as well (ie velocity) for the balance?

Or wait for 12 then do another Amex family transfer. Effectively $400 for 50k points and you are still getting the travel credit to use

I'm in the same situation. I will be transferring the points to velocity during the next 15% promotion, and then I'll be transferring it to my velocity account.
The direct Amex transfer doesn't suit me, as I'm in the Ascent premium program, and hence will get charged $5 per 1000 points being transferred from Gateway to Ascent.

Just had a look at my business explorer card and it's linked to the gateway program. My explorer card was automatically linked to my ascent program when I got it a year ago :( Will have to give them a call during the working week.

The only thing I can no longer find is my travel credits for both cards so it seems I might need to call when I need to use them. Just need to check when they expire for the current period.
I had a similar situation on the missus' card. Tried to book a hotel with the travel credit. Credit got applied to booking total. Processed booking. However the booking got cancelled at the last stage as there was an error. Anywho, I tried booking again straight after the booking was cancelled and I didn't know what was going on at the time as the travel credit was not appearing. Had to get the amex travel specialist, via email, to check on it. Lots of back and forth saying the travel credit was already used, but it wasn't. Eventually got the travel credit reactivated.

On my card, the travel credit never appeared and I booked without thinking about it as I thought it would automatically apply since I didn't see an option to use it. Had to get the travel team to credit $400 back into my card. Took months for it to happen.

Good news. So it's Saturday noon now, and got through, to what I assume is an overseas call centre, and got my business explorer linked to my ascent program on my plat charge card. Initially she said it can't be done because it's different programs, but I said my other explorer was linked to the ascent. So she took a couple mins and came back saying it's linked and will take a few days to complete.

Just remembered I should have linked my other plat card to the one ascent programs.

This sounds like it is possible to link a business card MR program to a personal one. I tried to link Explorer to Business Accelerator a while ago. I was told it was possible and easily done but after 20 mins on hold, I was told they needed to keep business and personal programs separately. When I had a personal Edge, I had 2 separate Ascent programs as well. Not a huge problem for me as I only transferred to SPG so far but thinking about SQ now. Anybody else has 1 MR program (either Gateway or Ascent) for both business and personal cards?

I got an explorer, reserve and platinum business charge, and I got them all linked about a month ago.

Ive just received my bonus poitns for a referal for the explorer card, and I will be taking their points as well due to me paying their annual fee,

but 130,000 points plus $395 in travel credit all for $395 is absolutely amazing value, 130k points can be sold for approx $1300, even hough the travel credit isnt worth $395

wish I had more reatives without amex cards:)

hey guys, I want to transfer my reward points from Amex Explorer to Asia miles and then cancel my cc.
My question is: After transfering my points and canceling my CC I will still be able to use my points from Asia miles right?

I don't need to keep my CC account open to use these points?

Correct, once you have transferred them to another program the Amex CC is not relevant
