amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Yeah, still showed as Gateway for the entire time until the switch-over.. Then it just came up with the message to check under Plat Edge card, so no more points posted under Gateway. I don't recall exactly, but pretty certain they just transferred all the existing Gateway points over in the same process (i.e it was all there when completed).

Alright. I gave up trying to argue my case for the bonus points, tried the trick suggested previously on this forum but still no go. Now just happy if I can have my Ascent back.

Hah, also tried some of those 'tricks' around bonus, but it seems like those days are well and truly over. Got nothing. Didn't bother requesting/arguing.. :)

Has anyone been able to link their Explorer to the Ascent program recently?

Did it a few weeks back, one call, no issue. Have a previous Plat Edge.

The operator seemed surprised it wasn't linked by default already. Took about a week for them to do.

I phoned up to get the 5K sup cards on my edge and explorer just now and got a very helpful Aussie - after sorting the sups I asked about linking the MR accounts and she was also surprised they weren't already, she initiated the link advising it would be about 3 days with no loss of points - my previous attempts had all been met with an instant no.

That call just increased my SQ conversion value by 120,000

The link makes an already great product a fantastic one - from an earn perspective on par/better than the platinum charge (minus Qantas) with no annual earn restrictions and a third of the annual fee. Use the travel credit, and it's effectively free. Worthy replacement for Citi Prestige.

5k supp card promotion is back via phone ? or can it be online as well ?

My accounts have been linked with all points now showing under my edge - I wasn't expecting it to happen so quick and painlessly :)

I've also called to link my Explorer under the Ascent programme. At first was told no because I've asked to separate them from the beginning. After I've insisted saying I'm allowed to change my mind it was finally done 3 days later.

Only downside is that now each time logging in I see the Explorer instead of my main Charge account and they can't do anything to fix but it's first world problem..

Just wondering. Currently have Explorer. Thinking of applying for Edge. Will the Rewards program come linked or would I have to link it manually after I get the Edge card?

It seems to depend. Even if you have to link them manually, by phoning up, it isn't too much hassle and it is certainly worth it!

Good luck!

Hi guys, how long is the wait for the welcome bonus points to be posted after $1500 clears? It's been a week now for us, thanks!

Best amex combo cards, currently I spent $30,000 monthly with amex explorer. Its crazy $1 for 2MR !

What happens with this card after a year. I assume $395 fee and travel credit all reset?
Ce been told people get the annual fee waived if they ask nicely or threaten to cancel.
I assume those that put lots through are more eligible

Amex don’t seem to be open to reducing or removing annual charge but do seem to throw around plenty of bonus points for you to stay.

But you get the travel credit right? So worst case scenario you break even (on paper)

Yes you do - which is what makes this such a great card - I have this and the Plat Charge so earn between 2 and 3 points on all of my spend - love it!

Guys I still haven't got my Explorer linked back to my Ascent rewards and my follow-up request got denied when I called, saying they are different rewards programs. So I think it's best not to unlink if your are already linked. I'm interested to know what happens to new Explorer card applicants who already have Ascent, is the system still defaulting to Ascent or is that loophole also fixed now?
