amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

referred the mrs in feb for a plat edge. i got the referral points. she held a edge about 12 months ago. didnt get the 15k points. she called up and they said she was denied the bonus based on the 18 month rule.

With the current Explorer promo (100k points) by 2 Oct, is there a difference applying direct at Amex site OR websites like finder/pointhacks/pointsfromthepacific/etc (they earn comm) OR using AFF posters referral links. From earlier posts, there were additional bonus points for applicants and referrers when using referral links. Is this still true?

There's no difference for this current round. Through those websites, the website owners earn a commission. Using referral links, you help a fellow AFF member.

Yes only difference is where the referral benefit is directed - those websites or our own members here. Currently nothing additional for applicants other than the warm feeling of knowing you helped out a fellow points nerd in meeting their goals! :p

There appears to be several threads for Explorer referalls however the thread for the current offer is this one:

Has anybody had any experience claiming screen replacement insurance through their explorer?

I currently pay my phone bill with my Amex via Paypal and am wondering if this is eligible to claim the smartphone screen insurance.

i made a claim which was approved seamlessly but i was paying directly from the explorer, not via paypal. i read the terms of the policy before lodging and dont remember there being anything about paypal being excluded in there.

There's the new Business Explorer card out now. Does anybody know if there are any major differences compared to the personal Explorer card?

Using a referral link helps an AFF member. That member may well return the favour to you at some stage in the future.

The key with this policy which isn't clearly explained until you read the fine print is: you need to pay your handset cost on the Explorer, not just the plan. You can buy the handset in one lump sum or in repayments over a period of time, so long as it was on the Explorer.

Main differences are the 50k retention bonus when you spend >$100k in a year and the better expense reporting traditionally associated with 'business' cards.
I'm thinking May be possible to get a decent retention bonus by calling up at annual fee time.
Only feature I'm interested in is the better expense tracking - currently takes a long time to do it manually on excel in categorizing each line item. I'm keen to hear how other members do this.

Give everything to the bookkeeper.

The annoying thing is using the card for multiple business expense. How do people get around the hassle of distinguishing spend for different businesses on the same card without going through it by hand.

Use a supplementary card for this purpose.
