amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

I asked for an 'additional' card which is the a/c card.they gave it to me. I think it depends on who you get at the contact center.

I agree, I have had call centre operators give me cards on my name and others refuse (doing it online seemed easier)

The key with this policy which isn't clearly explained until you read the fine print is: you need to pay your handset cost on the Explorer, not just the plan. You can buy the handset in one lump sum or in repayments over a period of time, so long as it was on the Explorer.

I got caught on this. My phone has been "paid off" (so to speak) for a while so I swapped from my $90ish PM plan with Voda down to the $40pm sim only. That was enough for Chubb (the insurer) to say no. I did push a little and they gave in as a "good will gesture". I promptly dropped the iPhone again a week later. Didn't bother reclaiming.

In other news, I have never in my life broken a phone, but have smashed my iPhone 6 screen 3 times. I blame the phone!

FFS I didn't twig to this at all. I've been copping the amex fine from vodafone every month thinking its getting me insurance but as I bought the phone outright ages ago and separately I'm not covered.

Same here until they rejected my claim as I'd used a different card to buy it outright as Explorer didn't exist then. I switched my sim only payments to Explorer and copped the extra charge seeing it as a cost of insurance but they also kicked my claim back.

The cost to repair a phone screen will be covered by your contents insurance if you have accidental damage cover. So a potential other avenue if AMEX insurance doesn't pay.

Tried applying for AC card but got told it's only available for business cards.

Has anyone had success for personal cards?

yes I got a AC card for my personal explorer. I do have business spend on it though.
I told him I needed a AC card to differentiate my business spend.

That's the same as I did with my personal Explorer card - I told them I wanted to separate personal and business spending when I asked for Supplementary cards for myself and my Wife. I was told it is classed as "Additional Cards" in these circumstances and that he would send through a request for ACs. A few days later I received additional cards for both of us. We have our initials on the cards we use for business spend and our full first names on the cards we use for personal spend.

Dam, guess I'll need to call back again later :(

Thanks for the tips everyone.

Reporting back
Just asked specifically for an AC account/card for personal explorer card and was given the ok. Bit confusing at the start but we eventually got there without asking any questions about why I need one.

Has anyone been able to link their Explorer to the Ascent program recently?

Did it a few weeks back, one call, no issue. Have a previous Plat Edge.

The operator seemed surprised it wasn't linked by default already. Took about a week for them to do.

Thanks petejay. During that one week did it still show your Gateway when you login online? I had to call a second time as the first operator wouldn't let me do it.

Yeah, still showed as Gateway for the entire time until the switch-over.. Then it just came up with the message to check under Plat Edge card, so no more points posted under Gateway. I don't recall exactly, but pretty certain they just transferred all the existing Gateway points over in the same process (i.e it was all there when completed).
