amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Neither of those points are true in my experience.
It was a quick call to get the travel credit made visible in the portal.

You cannot use the travel credit over the phone - I have tried multiple times and they always direct you to use the website.

I was told the same too, can't use over the phone but I could see both TCs when I logged in and could choose either, in my first year

As I have a 6 month gap between my edge and explorer I used one before the other appeared this year.

In my experience The Philipinos are useless. It's as if they're reading a script and not using any common sense. Or they don't have any

Eg when I couldn't log in to my system I called up and asked them to verify something .
They replied 3 times, to log in and to check it myself. Despite me saying that I couldn't log in

When I get an aussie rep. I've found they are very good.
I had a problem that lasted 3 weeks and about 6 phone calls previously That got nowhere. I called an Aussie guy and it was fixed in ten minutes with full apologies and 20k bonus points

Sent a recommendation of promotion of that staff member to head office.
Hope he got it

Back to. Topic but I did use my travel credit over the phone once

I was told by Philipoino staff that I could book the same hotel a few days apart with the one travel credit. So. I called and this was not true. However I ended up booking consecutive days over the phone

I. Don't know what to believe now

just called up as I had a problem with my travel booking using my travel credit, and they did it over the phone for me,
they did say it was a once off,

not sure what to believe now

Starting this april AMEX only give 0.5MR / $1 spent at australia post checkout using PAYPAL :(

For the past 12 months, I been enjoying 2MR / $1 spent...

Looks like amex system are getting smarter now :(

Is there an official announcement

That would suck

noooo, not postbillpay :(

I used it last on 29/03 and it came in as 2ppd.
will pay my electricity soon so lets see what I get

Ouch. Can confirm the Australia post PayPal route 0.5pts per dollar started on 3rd of April. Didn't even notice until you mentioned it. Luckily they were just small charges.

Postbillpay may still be 2 pts per dollar with PayPal

Postbillpay with paypal is 0.5MR. No hope now. Winner is rewardpay :)

could try writing a macro but then it would be one macro per merchant
overall still slower though, i agree

EDIT: using V1, could get 3ppd if using platinum edge to buy them

I had to pay some bills a week ago through on paypal. just checked, definitely 0.5ppd,

its a sad day, thank fully there are other options, albeit a bit more time consuming

Earn rates on the amex travel website has been cut.

Used to be 2ppd + 1 bonus ppd. The bonus is now gone. I booked in Jan to use my travel credit and got the bonus. Booked another in March to use another travel credit and no bonus 1ppd
