amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Hi All,

I have a plat edge at the moment, if I sign up for the explorer card will I be able to receive the 50000 bonus points?

Thanks,
K.

No you are an existing card holder. unless the edge is a supplementary card?

I had to call again to get Explorer and Edge relinked. They randomly unlinked after using travel credits.

The Filipino call centre was very helpful - took about 5 minutes.

Pretty sure amex is clamping down on any new cardholders trying to link?

I set up the initial linking 6 months ago, so the CSR could see it in the system. It might be harder for new cardholders.

Any new cardholders been able to link recently?

Any new cardholders been able to link recently?

I applied for the Explorer in March this year (and got the 100,000 bonus points) and the Platinum Edge in April.

I just phoned up to get them linked, was informed my travel credit for the Explorer would be forfeited so I should use it first (which I had already done) and then said I'd lose my points too.

I said I'd been told it was possible, at which point the rep asked if she could call me back "in 10 minutes" to get confirmation from the MR team.

It ended up being 25 minutes, but she called to say "it's all done, your cards are linked and your points will show up on the Platinum Edge in 24/48 hours"

My Explorer accounts now says "Your loyalty information is linked with your card ending- xx_xx
Please switch to this card in order to view"

My PlatEdge (Ascent) balance only shows the existing ~300 points for now.

I will report back in a few days and let you know if the points show up or if it requires more phone calls :D

65+ hours later, still no points so I phoned again. The rep apologised for me having to chase this up.

She confirmed the points had been debited from the Explorer (Gateway) account, but not been approved to be credited to the PlatEdge (Ascent) account. She's put a request in with her manager, and said they would be credited within the day, "100% guaranteed" and apologised again.

But she then made the comment that it would not be reflected online for another 2-3 days

Btw if it wasn't for AFF (and this thread in particular) I would have had no idea I could link these cards, and might have blissfully (ignorantly) transferred my points to KF at 1:0.75

The sign-on bonus alone is now worth an extra 25,000 KF! Plus any future spend of course.

To show my appreciation I've just upgraded my membership to gold

Weird. I got 0.5 ppd for paying a council rate last month as per the changes via PayPal.

But I just paid a different council water and rates and got 2ppd via paypal

Has anyone had any joy in linking the rewards on Explorer to the ascent premium (charge) scheme? The comments I've seen seem to relate to ascent only (Edge).

Excuse my ignorance but what should I be specifically asking when I call up to link my Explorer to my Platinum Edge? Is it just that or do I need to ask to link the Gateway and Ascent programs?

Ask to link the 2 cards you have because it's too messy to have 2 separate rewards programs. Tell them you want them both linked to the Ascent program as you plan to mostly use your Platinum Edge ( which is a white lie). If you run into a knowledgeable/experienced call centre employee, they will refuse, stating that the 2 cannot be combined as they have different earn rates and different point value systems. Your aim is to keep trying at different times hoping to find an inexperienced Amex employee who permits the link to take place.

I ended up receiving the card and when activated, it was automatically linked to the charge program. Had to ring re activation issue on a supplementary explorer tgis week and the CSR told me I should link to charge program to make best use of the points, before seeing it was already done
