amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Not sure what you mean by 'I just got my card today, a week prior to registration,'
Hi, sorry for the confusion, perhaps i should rephrase it. I got the explorer today. the week before I applied, I cancelled the existing amex.
Hope that clarifies.

Hi guys, I just got my card today, a week prior to registration, I cancelled my previous amex with had gateway points. The new card came, linked to my old account with existing gateway points. Has anyone experienced this scenario?

I haven't experienced it, but the card always remains in existence for a while after cancellation to allow for any further charges or refunds or whatever. So you'll probably need to call.

What was the existing Amex that you had?

No where in my application did Amex ask if I already had an account with them.

Hi CE, some members have reported only receiving one point per $ on overseas explorer spend in earlier posts. Can you kindly let us know what your overseas point earn is. Thanks in advance!
Please see snip of pts earn on Explorer - I spent the $400 real Travel Credit on 2nts accom Le Royal Meridoien Shanghai and paid the balance of booking $108.23 on Explorer earning 3pts/$ incl bonus pts. The other transaction is incidentals incurred during the 2nt stay - 2 x breakfast / visit to 789 Bar etc earning 2pts/$1 spend:

Hope this info is a help to others. Card has served it's purpose for me - have transferred pts this morn to KF - ~87.fK pts for ZERO cost - gotta love that! Will cancel as soon as pts appear in KF acc and then apply for the 100K QF Amex post XMAS with the Ette's referral making it 110K QF pts. You gotta admit this FF churning and burning is more fun than a back yard swing is it not?

Thanks for following up CE. I am keeping this card for the earn rate. Its now the main card I reach for. Churning and burning the other major bank cards. Diners just wrote to me to cancel my free card that I had for 18 years - no loss there!

Successfully merged my Explorer and Edge. Thanks for your help Imipenam and everyone else.

If anyone has question on how I did it - ping me and i'll be happy to walk you through the process.

Got a call today to say I'm approved, and an offer of a credit limit that's about twice what I wanted...

Now let's see if the bonus points come through, I had a QF Premium which I closed a few months ago...

Worth trying to see if they will give you 5,000 bonus points for adding a supplementary card holder before you cancel. This card comes with 4 free supplementaries.

I posted on the Explorer referral thread that although the promotion for adding supplementary card holders was over they were more than happy to pass on another 5,000 points when I asked.

And the supplementary card was in my name. Great for all the Amex offers.

Personally I think this card is a keeper.

How do you get a supplementary in your own name when you are the primary card holder?

You just ask!

I have 4 supplementary AMEX cards from my primary account all in my own name.

I wasn't ever questioned about it. But if I was asked why I wanted a supplementary card in my own name I'd say it was to keep track of separate purchases.

Yeah, I just asked. I have an A/C supplementary on my charge card in my own name and said I wanted similar on the Explorer.

Dr Ralph, is that 4 supplementaries in your own name on the one product (e.g. Explorer card?) maybe I need to ask again ðŸ

Yes. It's the The Qantas American Express Premium Card. I'm still waiting to receive my Exploer AMEX. But as soon as it arrives I'll be seeking supplementary cards.

thats a handy bit of info - no issues with showing ID when purchasing multiple GC when they are all in your own name :D

Nope. No one ever checks. I also usually use by partners cards which obviously aren't in my name. And there's another card in the name of Baby Gammy. Can't wait for the day someone tries to check that one :)

Hi All
probably been asked before but heregoes anyway .
I applied for a amex velocity about august last year . Cancelled card about February this year . Only currentlyhave westpac altitude visa which i have had forever . Question is do you think i'm a chance of getting the 100000 points if i apply or should i just look @ apply for another card offer ??? ( my credit rating is great & income makes it easy )
Cheers in advance .

Nothing is certain, but from personal experience (and that of many in here), you'll be fine. The rule seems to be if a new rewards account type is opened, then you'll get the bonus points (eg. MR Gateway, MR Ascent, Velocity, Qantas, etc)

I got the explorer bonus whilst holding a velocity platinum amex, so did mrs tizey, and she recently got the qantas bonus whilst holding the explorer.

I agree, you should have no problem.
