amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

sweet, I take it you got the points? :)

Everyone has gained the points so far. Everyone. You have to move to the Gateway Program if you start linked to Ascent. But spend the $1500 while linked to the Gateway MR and you will gain the 100K, or 110K if you use a referrral.

were you holding any other Amex cards at the time? Thinking of signing up but still have a plat edge.
I was holding other Amex cards. Holding the platinum edge will be fine. You will definitely get the points.

I urge you you to use a referral link as you get more points as a sign on bonus.

Hi all, sorry to ask a question which has already been touched on but I just wanted to confirm I was on the right track with this one before applying.

I have a Platinum Edge Card which I use regularly and get good use from. My wife had a AMEX Velocity Platinum which she cancelled about 10 months ago. She has not held any direct to AMEX card since then.

I am keen for us to jump on the AMEX Explorer bandwagon given the current points offer. Can anyone see why my wife would not receive the bonus points if she applied now, given she does not currently hold an AMEX product at all? I am aware they say you need to have not held a product for X amount of time to be eligible, however does anyone have any recent experience with this specific promotion which indicates this will not effect her being award the points once the minimum spend is met?

Also, what the chances of me keeping my Plat Edge and also applying and receiving the points? Can you hold and Ascent and Gateway account concurrently or does this not work? I would be considering dumping the promo gateway points into my SPG account to cover accommodation on a future trip this year... Not really keen combining the accounts as whilst I am aware its worked well for some people it does appear a little hit and miss... Worst case scenario I forgot about the Explorer if there is uncertainty about getting the bonus points and the wife signs up and grabs the points? Am I missing something here?

Apologies again for rehashing what may have already been explained, however I am looking for some clarity...

No issue for your wife as Velocity is a different program to Gateway.

No issue for you either (I held Edge and applied Explorer) and bonus points posted after meeting the required spend provided your Gateway is not link to Ascent. Simple phone call will have them unlinked and make the required spend.

You could apply via referral for your wife and use her referral (once the card is activated) for yourself so you both could pocket the extra 30K points (if, only if the card arrive by next week). Get on this quick.

Yes your wife will gain the sign on bonus.

Yes you will too. You can have up to two Amex Credit Cards and will gain sign-on bonus as long as they are in different awards programs. Ascent and Gateway are different Programs.

Thanks for this! I understand the Gateaway and Ascent are different - do they come automatically linked? I would have thought they would be separate unless you wish to try and link them which I have heard some people have had mixed success with. Thanks again for your reply.

Mixed review on this as some had it linked and some not. Mine not linked when I got it.

Correct, they're both different programs - my Explorer came linked to Ascent as I already held a Platinum Edge. I was advised on the phone this happens due to you being an existing loyal customer. I managed to get mine unlinked, made the initial $1500 spend for the points and then have the programs linked up. I had to call a couple of times though to get them linked up again, I had success at about 10pm on a Saturday night.

It is a lucky dip.

Mine was linked. My wife's was separate.

Many posters on AFF have reported both occurrences.

Unlinking is easy. You can call up anytime.

It is the re-linking which is more problematic.

You will receive amex explorer supps card in the next 4-5 working days.

Cheers

A warning for others. I tried this. Applied for supplementary cards in legitimate names. Caused huge problems that I'm still trying to get AMEX to fix. I've spend hours on the phone so far with this problem. 10 days later I still don't have my supplementary cards. AMEX said their system went into melt down when I applied for platinum edge cards from my explorer account.

I don't recommend you do this. Just call them to get your supplementary cards.

Have to warn again about this. Because I followed this advice all of my AMEX cards have now been suspended. When I called up they claimed that I held 4 different AMEX accounts including Platinum edge and one I've never heard of called Lifestyle.

DO NOT apply for additional cards as anything other than the card that you hold.

I'm waiting for a call back from AMEX to try and sort it all out and have my Explorer card reactivated.

ok, im officially confused, I was goign to call late at night tonight to get 4x supp cards ,
under different names (that are real)

so are you supposed/allowed/recommend to apply for supp cards under variations of your own names or real other people????

ive also read that some people are being asked for ID for supp cards

I'd suggest you do apply by calling. I'm not advocating false names and I didn't apply using false names.

I acted on the advice of bbqwer who said not to call them, but instead to apply online for additional Explorer cards using the link for Platinum Edge cards. THIS HAS NOT WORKED! And it's now seen my Explorer account suspended. DO NOT FOLLOW THE ADVICE!

I suspected it wouldn't work when it was suggested earlier.

Sorry to hear of your problems Betty. AMEX are usually very good with customer service so hopefully all will be sorted for you very quickly.

5 calls to AMEX over the past 2 days have only seen the problem get worse! Customer service agent was screaming at me by the end of the last call.

DO NOT APPLY FOR SUPPLEMENTARY CARDS FOR THE EXPLORER CARD ONLINE.

Wish I'd never applied for those supplementary cards now.
