amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Annual fee has not yet been deducted.

I have spent just over $2k at the moment.

Another possibility if you are lucky is that Amex have reverted to posting the sign-on bonus after some weeks (as per Terms) which is what normally happens. With the Exploer it was posting immediately after spend, but this is actually not the normal Amex practice.

So for points newbies like me, is there a consensus on the bonus points if you already have an Edge card?

The bonus points are great to have.

But at earn rate of 2 Points per $ this is a handy Amex to have anyway and especially as the $400 Travel Credit cancels out the $395 Fee. Linking to an Edge should be able to still be achieved which then earns the preferable 2 Ascent MR points per $ rather than the 2 Gateway Points per $.

Having and Explorer and and Edge is a fantastic combination IMO. Cashback promotions further sweeten the deal.

Log onto your Amex account or call them up and check when your last application was. People have report that they are still getting the points despite having held a card within the last 18 months.

I've just hit the minimum spend which has cleared and I cannot see the bonus points on my account :(.....I will wait a few days to see if there are any updates and then try the dreaded call.....
Whilst it does seem like AMEX have tightened up a lot in the last month and a bit on their previous loop holes. I have been noticing a trend in sign on bonuses taking much longer to post after the min spend has been met - many weeks in some cases. Previously it used to very quick!Whilst it is no guarantee I wouldn't give up all hope yet!

And prior to that is was slow to very slow.

But yes current Terms are: 100,000 Membership Rewards Bonus points will be awarded to the eligible Card Member’s account 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met

So points could still post.

I have successfully de-linked my card from Ascent. But there's no Gateway shown when I login. Do I need to make a purchase first for it to show?

Annual fee was charged today.

I'll give it till the end of next week and if the bonus points don't post I'll just give them a call. Fingers crossed it's just a slow posting of points.

The Explorer defaults to Gateway so if it's no longer linked to another AmEx, it will be Gateway. If you want to verify, either use the mobile app and check (on the home screen) in the grey box. It's right above your points balance (but you may need to spend something first).
Alternatively, login to the website and click on Membership Rewards (My Points History). There, on the top right side in a minuscule drop down menu (next to My Redemptions, My Points etc) it should show 'Gateway'.

That's the thing, when I login, on the right hand side it doesn't say any reward points at all (it doesn't even say 0 points). I just spent something this morning so maybe I'll wait until the transaction clears and check again.

Cool.. btw in case anyone is interested, they have 3k points bonus if you add a supplementary card over the phone. Now I hope my 3k points is not stuck in limbo because of the delinking.

Is this bonus for one supplementary card per account (Explorer, Edge) or per customer (across all card holdings)?
