amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

A supplementary card arrived today along with a welcome letter saying my card, that I got 2 days ago, should be here in 5-7 days :D

I own Velocity Platinum and Platinum Edge. I'm looking to perhaps cancel both cards and replace with the 1 Explorer card. However, I wouldn't qualify the 100K MR points sign up bonus as I've only got the Velocity Platinum in July 2015 during the 100K Velocity sign up bonus. It would simplify my annual fees, and using the domestic flight as I'm just struggling to use them every year. $400 credit would work nicely since I travel overseas every year and this would certainly offset the flight ticket prices.

I use my cards very actively but I don't spend too much on groceries nor eat out to maximise the 3 points per dollar spent.

So, perhaps have to hold both cards until the 18 months are up and then look at what the potential sign up bonus on the Explorer card later in Dec or Jan.

nice!

My card arrived today :)
Referral program not working for me either..

Welcome to AFF tuvz, I applied last week and had a credit hit today, but don't know if I have been successful yet

To be eligible for the bonus offer under the T&C, you need to not have held any amex issued credit card for the last 18 months (not from date of application), so holding the card you got now means the 18 month clock never starts.

Although on the other hand, reports have shown people do get the bonus offer regardless, so you might want to give it a shot anyway.

Yea - that happened with Velocity Platinum where the 100K Velocity points were successfully credited to my account as I have held the Platinum Edge for a very long time (since they introduced that card back in 2010, I think?)

I'm ineligible as I only cancelled the Velocity Platinum back in April this year but it is worth a try

If I have Plat Charge, Reserve and Edge, I would have to bin one of the Reserve or Edge in order to scoop this new card wouldn't I?

You can only have from Amex 2 Amex Credit Cards (Not that is Credit and not Charge). So yes you would have to cancel one CC.

Not regardless. The key is to make sure the new Amex Reward program is not one that you are already in. It seems from reports that if it is then you do not get the points.

Thanks mate :) Yeh amex have gotten really bad at texting/emailing people when they get approved...:-|

AMEX sent me 15 letters of the exact same content when I updated my direct debit details the other day. In addition they sent an email that still had merge fields (I.e unmerged). No wonder why the last direct debit failed?

Just got the Explorer card today and activated it.

Looking at the T&Cs and Gateway website, it looks like you can still transfer the MR Gateway points to Hilton (1000:1000) and SPG (1000:500), which is the same rate as Ascent. That is another big plus if you plan to use those Gateway points for hotel stays (especially if you have plenty of points for air travel).
