amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Just got the Explorer card today and activated it.

Looking at the T&Cs and Gateway website, it looks like you can still transfer the MR Gateway points to Hilton (1000:1000) and SPG (1000:500), which is the same rate as Ascent. That is another big plus if you plan to use those Gateway points for hotel stays (especially if you have plenty of points for air travel).

So 0.9 AA or AS per $ via SPG

Edit: if ratios as you say it is 1.2 AA/AS

Welcome to AFF tuvz, I applied last week and had a credit hit today, but don't know if I have been successful yet

Thanks mate :) Yeh amex have gotten really bad at texting/emailing people when they get approved...:-|

I returned home from a business trip tonight to find a welcome pack and card - so apparently I have been approved ;)

Card showed up tonight with a measly credit limit ($3k!!)...aiming to hit min spend tomorrow and have points early next week.

Will probably cancel platinum charge and keep this card for actual ongoing amex spend... Just got to get a better limit!

Hmmmm so got the card today (didn't even know was approved) and under points balance it says check your Platinum Edge account????? I thought they are two different rewards programs??! Does this mean bye bye to a potential signup bonus?

Would be good if it will credit points to the ascent account will be better earn rate then :)

Amex are always pushing me to increase the limit on my cards...you should have no trouble requesting a credit increase

Just had a look and I was only given $4.8k - seems very low compared to other recent cards.

I think it is likely you will not get any sign up bonus, as generally speaking you will only get sign up bonus if a new membership reward account was created. (i.e. if you had gateway and then got a ascent MR, or going from ascent to ascent premium)

But it does mean that points will be credited to ascent instead of gateway so it will be a true 2 points per $.

For new Explorer card holders, you should be able to see Gateway as part of the Membership Rewards drop down.

I always select choose my limit and pick 3k... I reckon it helps with approvals

Is this a thought or there's evidence to suggest this? Just curious...

Been a so-so experience with this thus far. Called Amex a week or so ago to enquire about doing a product swap from platinum edge to the explorer. Spoke to a friendly and helpful lady who said they don't do product swaps as such, however to fill out the application and "there should be a box you can tick that says you're swapping from another card". Sounds good... Except there's not.

Put the application through yesterday and got the usual "we'll get back to you" message. Called again to just check on the process and was initially told "well you didn't just apply for it, did you, we hadn't even opened applications for that new card yet". After dealing with that hurdle, got a flurry of excuses and it ended up with "if you get it you get it, if you don't then I can't help you".

Given every other institution has a very simple product swap process, I don't understand why Amex makes it so hard.

That's been one of my bug bears with Amex all along if you want a new product need to get re-assessed from scratch like a new customer - meaning you'll also get a new credit inquiry.

Yes, someone earlier in the thread has been given points for the card with it being held prior.

I'd hoped to hit my $1500 spend this morning - card was blocked at coles this morning, sounding similar to this guy: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....atinum-edge-30-000-a-77743-2.html#post1504132

Really hoping they resolve it today - I'd like to transfer the points for KF Miles to redeem some flights I've got reserved!

Anyone with a platinum edge had the card automatically linked to the edge's ascent program and still got the bonus 100k points? That would be the ideal situation.
