Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Just called to cancel my Amex Qantas Ultimate, as the $450 annual fee was charged yesterday. Straight up asked if I was eligible for any retention offers - was told I would need to go through the cancellation process to see if anything was offered by the system - there were no guarantees.

I was happy to cancel anyway if there were no offers - ended up being offered a transfer to the zero fee card, or 10,000 points. Took the 10,000 (better than nothing).

In the past I have downgraded to the Amex Qantas Essential Card (zero fee) - and then a few months later accepted their upsell points offer to upgrade.

Interestingly for me was how the call played out. Basically I was told I had to commit to cancelling before they'd show their hand - and then afterwards told that if I had any e-wallets (e.g. ApplePay), that I'd have to re-add my card, as it was 'cancelled' temporarily (it's still working fine in my ApplePay)

I had to go through the same and was offered the downgrade or the 15,000. Declined both and canceled, will be back in 18 months rather than spend the $450 (even with travel voucher).

Yeah agreed, the 18 months drags slowly. If you're in it for the bonus points then I tend to find it's better to just bite the bullet and cancel & restart the clock asap

I have a Virgin Velocity Platinum Amex, 18 months from the last time i called up for a retention bonus. I called went through cancellation, the rep read the riot act lol, then asked for feedback, I just said there were deals out there for over 100k points, then asked if she could check if i had a retention bonus, she offered 120k Velocity points to not go through with the cancellation, a few hours later, the 120K is in my velocity points for the monthvelcotu.jpg

Wow nice score! I've been thinking about cancelling my Velocity platinum lately too, so this is a good sign to try next week. Held a gold/platinum for nearly 9 years now, so you'd think there would be at least a small loyalty bonus!

Just called as platinum charge annual fee hit the account this morning. Also hold Plat edge, Qantas Ultimate and reserve. Was totally honest and said nearly $2k in annual fees a year and I need to justify the amount. Got transferred to cancellations and repeated the message and was offered 70k points to retain me. Not as much as others, but I use the cards heavily, have DD's etc and they would know that so not going to say no. Accepted the offer.

Sometimes you can negotiate the bonus points. They offered me 50k initially but I didn’t accept and told them I got 200k points last time. Then, the agent told me to hold the line a few minutes and came back with 200k points offer to keep the card opened, the points posted on my account within 5 days.

I did try that. Said 70k was less I was expecting. She said she had already gone straight to the top offer as the system also had a 50k approval. Who knows if that’s true or not

Anyone getting any points offered in the last month or two when doing the cancellation dance for an Amex credit card? All the most recent reports are for the charge card.
