Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Pro tip: For those with an Amex Platinum and Reserve card. Try to get the best offer without mentioning the Platinum Reserve and then ask to cancel that to get a combined offer.

I was offered 50k initially when cancelling Amex Platinum. After going through their talk of how great value they think the card is they asked specifically why. I mentioned the devaluation of the card in general and they asked anything in particular. I mentioned devaluation of conversion to Singapore. They came back with an offer of 100k but not to be credited until after the next devaluation in October (or I could have the 50k now instead).
I still declined so went to cancel. Afterwards I asked to cancel my Platinum Reserve card too. This is where they were able to give a combined retention offer of 140k points to be credited right away instead of post devaluation in October. Pretty decent given what others have been offered. I wouldn't consider myself a huge spender on the card either.

I've always wondered that. Thanks and well done!

Is it based on the customer service agents discretion or based on what they type into the computer and what offer the computer comes back with.

Professional association discount
Is there a list of associations offer the discount?

It might be both but definitely the later as a minimum. The person I spoke to mentioned specifically that was what the system is offering. Also there was an offer on the Reserve card because I did use it (even though occasionally and low amounts) it was enough for the system to prompt with an offer.

Anyone tried with Explorer card recently and successfully? I tried via live chat and was told not able to offer due to legislation changes few years ago. I thought I had seen someone or two getting it with personal cards.

Amex platinum edge. Called number on the back of the card during business hours - went through to the "I need to speak to someone else" pathway. Told them my AF was due soon (7 days away) and I was thinking of cancelling because there were a lot of bonus points offers out there. Told the rep I knew I needed to cancel the card because they couldn't offer retention bonuses but I wanted to see what offers they could then make to reinstate. He transferred me to the cancellation team and confirmed I would need to tell them I did actually want to cancel.

Then spoke to the cancellation team rep - same spiel. She took me through the cancellation script, I said to proceed. She cancelled the card and then immediately offered 30,000 MR to reinstate, which I took (I am really happy with Amex generally so I didn't need huge points incentives to stay). Card reinstated on the call, points to be deposited within 48 hours.

Whole call took less than 10 min - both reps knew exactly what the situation was, very polite and no runaround at all.

For comparison purposes I probably spend on average $3-4k p/m, no balance carried, customer since 2018.

Data point: I saved all my statements and emptied my points. Totally ready to cancel and restart the clock.

Online chat, "I want to cancel my card". Transferred to cancellation team who did so without question. Asked for a reason afterwards, I cited the devaluation of SQ points. Got offered 80,000 points to reinstate. Agreed. I have minimal spend on this card because I only use it for groceries and for cashback offers - max $200/week.

Now to see if the points post before 1/ the devaluation and 2/ my annual fee being charged in October!

Any hint as to what card? 😉

Can't a girl have some mystery? ;)

... edge. Had the explorer/edge combo for years before relinquishing to just the one.

Thanks motlking - due to your post, gave them a call just now.

I was pretty straight up with my first agent Ed - just told him I was disappointed in yet ANOTHER devaluation (2019 was the great de-valuepocalypse prior)

I then told him I wanted to cancel - he transfered me to Vanessa - who then was like, I'd like to give you 100k post devaluation. TBH given I was fishing, I was like that's fine. I actually forgot about your 'cancel the reserve card too' because in my mind, once you nuke the charge, it nukes the reserve card (evidently not)

That's 'only' 30k Krisfyler miles, but it's 1/3 a business class ticket to EU for 10m on the phone, so I'm cool with that! (Also amusingly, if you look at my account, I think I've racked up about 500k of 'one time only loyalty bonuses' in the past 5 years)

Another data point for this thread!

EDIT: Additional data point - my renewal date is October 13 - and the devaluation is like a week and a bit before it...

Reserve: Annual fee due mid-late Oct. Same dance (devaluation, surcharge etc.. etc..). Was offered 100K points which posted into account immediately. Spend around 600-700K per year.
Sorry just to clarify, is this a companion card or paid?
