Sorry the Charge Card I meant, not reserve.Sorry just to clarify, is this a companion card or paid?

I wasn't expecting much as I've only had my card for 10 months. Called to ask if I could change my Velocity Platinum to Qantas Ultimate, I was told I can't change card types and would need to cancel and apply again. I asked if I could get a retension offer and was told there's no retention offer available at the moment. Got transferred to the cancellation team and the card was cancelled.
I was then asked why I cancelled and I explained I have enough velocity points and I wanted to change card types. I was then offered to change to the Amex Platinum Edge credit card instead. I then asked if I just kept my Velocity card would I get a retension offer. They offered 15,000 velocity points which I took and my card was reinstated.
Thank you for the data point Knagelli!Called the Amex Platinum Customer to cancel my charge card and was offered 100K points ( to be credited between 15th - 31st Oct ). I had also asked to cancel my reserve card and was offered 80K points to be credited immediately.
As I use the card a lot , accepted both the offers ( charge card - no cancellation was initiated / reserve card - cancellation was initiated and the card had to be reinstated).
Hope this helps others in the same boat. Cheers.
No major charges to the card. Around 2k a month on average.Did you have any major spends on your card ? If I may ask , what was the average monthly spend on your card.
It certainly appears as such.Do you need to actually "cancel" the card to get the points.
It certainly appears as such.
Only when the cancellation "happens", the system prompts the agent that there's an offer to retain the customer, by offering x amount of points. Without actually cancelling the card, the offer doesn't show up. Something to do with 2019 Australian government regulations and enticing customers to keep credit.
You have to make sure that the card is reinstated on the same call/chat otherwise the cancellation may very well be permanent.
Good luck and let us know how you end up going after it all!
Try and be brave. The actual cancellation part scares me, from memory you have 30 days to have it "auto re-instated" but I do not trust Amex
Will call tomorrow!

HUACA is the best policy. The guy I spoke to yesterday seemed to be cool and clearly knew what I was referring to and acknowledged that the devaluations were infact hurting many.OK soo my experience yesterday system said NO for both the Edge card and the reserve card, the lady knew that was I doing and said no offer on both - the edge is due for renewal in 3 weeks should I try then or play the HUACA game....
Are you guys transferring your points away before you initiate the cancellation request for those who only have 1 card with Amex? My understanding was that you forfeit your points if you close your only card with Amex (not sure about the 30 days turnaround period to reinstate it).
Are those who are cancelling have their annual fee up for renewal soon? Or doing it prior?
mine is due in 2 weeks so I called twice and was told there are no offers on both timesAre those who are cancelling have their annual fee up for renewal soon? Or doing it prior?
