Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Called this morning to cancel my QF Ultimate card. I spoke with an Australian agent and asked directly if there were any retention offers available? He indicated that they don't do them any more and the only offer was to downgrade to a fee free card.
$5-7k per month on the card.
That would be downgrade to Qantas Discovery @yld200 ?
Curious to know what you decided as I could be looking at this next year.

I've personally had greater success with the chat option.
No bonus was offered over phone for me but they did offer 20k over chat.

If I may ask , was that after the annual fee was posted or before ? I just paid my annual feel but no luck at all with getting some points as retention bonus.

"Just paid" meaning the fee has posted to your statement, or that you have actually paid that statement? Once you've paid the statement where your renewal fee has posted, you've really lost any leverage...

I am on the "professionals" branded plat via union.

This is interesting, the $1200pa annual fee variant? I think this has been notoriously difficult for others to get any retention bonus on in the past. What's your approx annual spend?

Correct.
My spend is mostly sporadic as I don't really spend much on non-essentials except holidays and deductibles.

I would guesstimate 4.5k p/m if I average it out (spiking in the months when I go on leave from work).

That being said, I've started to rotate my entire family's spend (which they were paying via debit) through my account so I expect that to grow somewhat.

I also thought I was getting the short end of the stick since someone mentioned a couple months ago about getting 100k points on their professionals plat.

I had already paid the annual fee and I acknowledge that I lost the leverage but still looking any faint chance of getting some retention bonus points.
