Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Just called the 1800 number and spoke to the cancellation/retention team. I'm 10 days away from renewal, Platinum Edge, and last year I was offered 30k points to reinstate on cancellation. Today's agent said they weren't doing points to reinstate cards anymore ("there have been a lot of reg changes in the last 12-18 months") and basically said he agreed that we weren't incentivised to be long term customers anymore and that he understood if I wanted to close the card. I'm going to call back and try one more time but if it's still a no-offer then I'll cancel. Does anyone have any advice to get past the "regulatory changes" hurdle?

No way around reg hurdle (cannot incetivise someone to stay) that I am aware of. They can reduce renewal fees out of good will, but not to incentivise you to stay. You can get a Platinum charge card as that is not a credit card, so does not appear to be subject to the same regs.

Person had no idea what they were on about and/or computer said no

Wife + mother called to cancel each of theirs.

Is that a Reserve card or charge card ?

Keen to understand as my renewal is due in 3/4 weeks and want to go with the best strategy.

My annual fee just hit, Plat charge, time for the call this week..........

Did you have any luck with the Plat Charge card renewal cancellation routine ?

First thing you need to do is transfer all your points out and pay the card off or else they won't think you're serious. Just had a successful bonus over 50k

Which card variant did you have ?

Was with the explorer card.
Make sure you go in ready to actually cancel it right away, tell them you understand if they can't, but would appreciate the chance to keep the card. Say you'd be open to either a retention bonus or a bonus to reinstate the card.

Can't even be bothered calling. Did a bigger "review" of the offers I've used and not used lately, to be brutally honest there's nothing in the past 24 months worth really writing home about. Surprised I kept the card this long really - 20k points would hardly be worth it.

QBR, large spend, threatened to cancel - 80k retention. Not totally happy with it given what a good customer I am for them and the reduced earn rate - but I'm not sure internally they shared info with eachother than I have the biz plat anyway now and would have happily cancelled the QBR and have fully transitioned out of this card regardless.

I got a 30,000 offer after a bit of a run around. Told them I wanted to cancel, they said they don't offer points anymore. I told the lady over the phone that I know my friend got an offer for 30,000 only 2 months ago. She asked if I had concerns over the annual fee which I said I did not. She promptly offered me 30,000 points after. I may have shot myself in the foot by stating my friend got 30,000 as that's all she offered me.
