Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Would be nice. Though to be fair the business explorer doesn’t get the $400 travel credit so I think that’s wishful thinking

I will call and report back soon. Any thought on my original question- transfer out the points before calling or it doesn't matter?

May be a matter of just asking 'do you have a retention offer for me?' given their system already has an offer of points based on your relationship with Amex they're likely expecting it.

Got offered 36000 points for my explorer retention (spend about $10000/month) and 23000 for wife's card(minimal spend).

Called to cancel with the reasoning of high surcharges ( tried to purchase a car and Subaru wanted 2.54% extra ) and less acceptance of the card. My spend is approx 100k / year on the plat charge. They offered 23k points, i asked for more and they said that's all they are able to offer ! Took the points

Was there a specific reason you gave for wanting to cancel your card, or did you straight out ask if there was a retention bonus available? My Explorer annual fee is coming up in a few months, so just working out the best thing to say for this one. :)

If you intend to follow through with your cancellation threat I'd move the points now.

does anyone know if the retentions team work weekends? I'm thinking of calling - just not sure if to wait until monday

Just said thinking about cancelling as annual fee too high. Retention bonus is offered almost immediately. However, I have never tried too hard for them to up the initial offer.

Got 30k for a green charge card (customer of 5 years) average 5-10k spend per month.

This month my mother and father in law both rang to cancel their Velocity Platinums, citing that they planned to have the cards for one year for the sign on bonus (which is true). Both were offered a fee free card and declined. I have previously cancelled other cards with this reason and also not been offered points

In Feb I rang to cancel my Velocity Platinum (I planned to go to explorer, I told them I was going to a different card but didn't say which one) and accepted 23k points to keep it instead. This turned out to be a good move as it was just after existing cardholders stopped getting sign on bonuses. I rang today to cancel the same card as the annual fee is due and cited a letter I received advising me of the new annual fee ($375) and reduced earn rates on restaurants/travel spend from 3rd October. I was offered and accepted 36k points to keep it (surprised me as my spend on it has been quite low in last 6 months) and they said changes to annual fee and earn rate are ONLY for new card members.

I'm not convinced that the earn rate won't change, but am very happy to have been given 59k point to keep it in a year.

Anyone notice now Amex mentions that for them to give you retention bonus you need to stay with them for another 12 months?
